Here's a great
way to celebrate your American heritage. Marcella C. Poludniak of Springfield, Illinois,
shares this antique "American Flag" quilt. It was made by her
great-grandmother from Illiopolis, Illinois, in the late 1800s. The quilter's unique,
folk-art representation of the flag causes us to admire her individualism and artistic
nature. |

| "Mattie's Memory"
was lovingly made by Diane Albeck-Grick, the art director who designed this book.
The vintage fabrics belonged to her great-grandma, Mattie Miller Squire, so Diane made the
quilt to honor her. Wouldn't Mattie be proud that her great-granddaughter has followed in
her footsteps? It's easier than you think to make your own version of the classic quilt
with the easy step-by-step direction provided in this book. |
When Adam celebrated his 18th
Birthday, as well as his independence by going off to college, Patti Wiggins Butcher of
Lawrence, Kansas, stitched "Adam's Freedom." Adam is surely

lovingly made by his mother. Use simple piecing and show off your appliqué skills by
making your own version of "Adam's Freedom" in any combination of red, white,
and blue fabrics you prefer. |

was made by Lisa Boyer of Kapaa, Hawaii. Lisa made this quilt in a class taught
by Ruth Mosher. The block layout is Ruth's design but the border design is Lisa's. Lisa
credits Ruth with turning her into the enthusiastic quilter she is today and says that
Ruth is a very special friend as well as a wonderful teacher. You'll use quick-piecing
methods to make your own version of this country-style quilt. |

| Ohio Star blocks flatter
the embroidered flag in the "Star Spangled Pillow" (14"
square). A quick-piecing technique makes the blocks quick to stitch. Make your pillow with
navy fabrics and embroider it in blue, as shown, or use red fabrics and thread if you
prefer to make a "Redwork" design for your home. |
