Bandana Flags

Bandana Flags

Design ©1991 by Helen M. Anton

Bold pieced flags are the building blocks of this cheery wallhanging.

OVERALL SIZE: 23" square

BLOCK SIZE: 3 1/16" square

MATERIALS                       Yardage is estimated for 44" fabric.

  • 1/8 yard navy and white star print  NOTE: You may need a bit more of the star print, depending on the arrangement of the stars on the fabric.
  • 3/8 yard red - quiltmaker Helen Anton used a red bandana print
  • Scraps of a secondary navy print
  • 2/3 yard white - Helen chose pure white "because the white in the flag represents purity. When a flag shows wear, discoloration or deterioration there is a specific procedure for disposal."
  • 1/8" yard fabric for binding - Helen used navy solid
  • 25" square, or 3/4 yard, fabric for backing
  • 25" square of thin batting

DIRECTIONS                                                                                                The flag block is adapted from an original block on page 25 of Patchwork in Miniature, Volume I, ©1988 by Helen M. Anton. It is used with Helen's permission.

  • Stitch together alternately 2 of the 15/16" x 44" red strips and 2 of the 15/16" x 44" white strips. From the resulting pieced strip, cut sixteen 1 13/16" segments.

Bandana Flags, diagram 1
  • Sew each of the 1 13/16" segments to a 2 1/4" star print square, completing the top half of the flag.

Bandana Flags, diagram 2

  • Stitch 15/16" x 44" red strips to the left and right sides of both remaining 15/16" x 44" white strips. From these pieced strips, cut sixteen 3 9/16" segments.

Bandana Flags, diagram 3

  • Sew the 3 9/16" segments to the bottom edge of the previously pieced units, completing the flag blocks. Make 16 blocks. Press.

Bandana Flags, diagram 4

  • Join the flag blocks together using the A, B, C, D and DR pieces. Refer to the Assembly Diagram below as needed. Note that set-in piecing is required for this entire section.

Bandana Flags, diagram 5

  • Stitch the 1 1/4" x 17" red border strips to the left and right sides of the quilt.

  • Stitch the 1 1/4" x 18 1/2" red border strips to the top and bottom edges of the quilt.

  • Stitch the 1 1/2" x 18 1/2" white border strips to the left and right sides of the quilt.

  • Stitch the 1 1/2" x 20 1/2" white border strips to the top and bottom edges of the quilt.

  • Sew a white E to every colored E, making 20 E-E pairs like this.

Bandana Flags, diagram 6
  • Now lay out a row of 5 E-E pairs. There should be 3 reds, with navy E-E pairs between them. Stitch the row together. Sew a navy F to each end of the row, as shown. Make 4 identical rows.

Bandana Flags, diagram 7
  • Taking 2 of the pieced rows, stitch one to the left side and one to the right side of the quilt.

  • Sew a G square to both ends of both remaining pieced rows. Then stitch them to the top and bottom edges of the quilt.

  • Press the quilt top.

  • Mark the top with any quilting design you may wish to use.

  • Sandwich the top, batting and backing, and baste for quilting. Quilt as desired.

  • Bind using the 1" strips.
