  • Cut 4: 2 3/4" squares

Red:

  • Cut 1: 1 1/4" x 28" strip
  • Cut 2: B

White Print:

  • Cut 1: 1 1/4" x 28" strip
  • Cut 4: A

DIRECTIONS

  • Join blue and white print A pieces checkerboard fashion as shown.

Liberty, diagram 1
  • Sew red B pieces to top and left side of checkerboard to complete heart.
  • Using your favorite method, appliqué heart to the 7" muslin square. Straight edges belong about 3/4" from bottom and right edge.
  • Appliqué blue stars, being very careful when clipping seams and trimming points. One star goes above the heart and the other stars belong on the 2 3/4" squares. (HINT: Lightly press a diagonal line through square. Line up the star point and the center of the bottom of the star on this folded line.)

Liberty, diagram 2

  • Staying 1/4" away from the edge of the square, appliqué stars.
  • Join red, blue and white print strips with 1/4" seams to make a 2 3/4" x 28" strip.
  • Cut this strip into four 7" pieces. Each piece will now be 2 3/4" x 7".

Liberty, diagram 3

  • Sew 2 of the 7" strips to the top and bottom of the heart block.

Liberty, diagram 4

  • Sew 2 star blocks on the ends of each remaining 7" strip.

Liberty, diagram 5

  • Sew these strips to sides of heart block.

  • Lightly press completed block and trim any uneven edges.

  • Sew muslin border strips around all sides of the block, mitering corners. Press.

Liberty, diagram 6

  • Trim batting even with top.
  • Trim backing 3/4" larger all around.
