Patriotic Star

Patriotic Star

by Jean Love

Appliqué red hearts and a traditional pieced star make an ever-lovin' combination!

OVERALL SIZE: 20" x 20"

BLOCK SIZE: 13 1/2"

MATERIALS                          Yardage is estimated for 44" fabric.

  • 1/4 yard muslin
  • 1/4 yard navy star print
  • 1/4 yard red star print
  • 22" x 22" piece of backing fabric
  • 22" x 22" piece of thin batting
  • 1/8 yard navy solid for binding
  • 3 1/2" x 20" piece of freezer paper

CUTTING                                                                                                 Pattern pieces are full size. The A and B pieces and all dimensions include a 1/4" seam allowance.

  • Cut 5: A, muslin; for no-template cutting, make five 5" squares
  • Cut 5: hearts from freezer paper  NOTE: Cut the freezer paper hearts exactly the size of the heart template.
  • Cut 4: B, muslin; for no-template cutting, make a 5 3/4" square and cut it from corner to corner in both directions
  • Cut 4: B, red star print
  • Cut 8: B, navy star print
  • Cut 2: 1 1/4" x 44" strips, muslin, for innermost border
  • Cut 2: 1 1/2" x 44" strips, red star print, for middle border
  • Cut 2: 2" x 44" strips, navy print, for outermost border
  • Cut 2: 2" x 44" strips, navy solid, for binding

DIRECTIONS

  • Put freezer paper hearts shiny side up on the wrong side of the red fabric. Pin the paper hearts in place, keeping them 1/2" apart.  NOTE: Be sure the hearts are lined up with the straight grain of the fabric running in the same direction as the arrow on the heart template.

  • Cut around the freezer paper hearts, leaving a 1/4" turn-under allowance at the top indentation of the hearts almost to the edge of the freezer paper.

  • Leaving the pins in place, lay the hearts on your ironing board, paper side up. Starting near the bottom print and moving counterclockwise, use the fingers of your left hand to lift and fold the turn-under allowance of the heart over the shiny freezer paper heart. Then press the turn-under allowance to the paper. Follow this procedure for all five hearts.  NOTE: Set your iron on dry - or the steam may burn your fingers!

  • Center and appliqué one heart on an A square, as shown.

  • Center and appliqué a heart diagonally on the other four A's.

  • Stitch the 4 red triangles to navy triangles, as shown. Stitch the 4 white triangles to navy triangles. Press the seams toward the navy fabric. Then stitch each navy and red pair of triangles to a navy and white pair, making 4 pieced squares. Press the seams toward the navy and red side.

  • Set the five appliquéd squares and the four pieced squares together in three rows of three blocks, as shown, to form the star. Be sure the red triangles touch the center square.

  • Stitch each row of three blocks together, then stitch the three rows together. Press.

  • Taking the 1 1/4" x 44" muslin strips, stitch them to 2 opposite sides of the wallhanging. Press seams toward the borders, then trim the ends of the strips even with the edges of the wallhanging.

  • Stitch the remainder of the 1 1/4" muslin strips to the other 2 sides of the wallhanging. Press seams toward the borders and trim the ends of the strips.

  • Follow the same procedure with the 1 1/2" x 44" red strips. Stitch the strips, press the seams toward the red fabric and trim the strips.

  • Press the quilt top.

  • Sandwich top, batting, and backing; and baste for quilting. Quilt as desired.

  • Bind using the 2" x 44" fabric strips.
