QUILT SIZE: 17 1/2"

BLOCK SIZE: 2 1/2" square

MATERIALS                                                                                          Yardage is estimated for 44" fabric.

  • 1/4 yard each of 9 different reds
  • 1/4 yard each of 9 different blues
  • 1/8 yard gold lamé
  • 1/8 yard silver lamé
  • 1/2 yard of blue for the border and binding
  • 18" square piece of backing fabric
  • 18" square piece of batting
  • Paper - copier weight
  • Permanent marking pen
  • Heavyweight gold and silver metallic thread
  • Clear template plastic
  • Lightweight fusible interfacing (optional) NOTE: This is a very challenging piece and we strongly recommend making several sample blocks from scraps before beginning.

PREPARATION

  • Cut twenty-five 4" squares of paper.
  • Center each 4" square over the full-size pattern. Transfer the design to the paper using a permanent ink pen. Hold the square over a light box or up to a brightly lit window and trace the design on the back side of the paper, also.
  • Make clear plastic templates of the 3 stars.
  • Trace around the star templates on the gold and silver lamé. You may find it easier to work with the lamé after fusing a lightweight interfacing to the back. Carefully follow manufacturer's directions. Trace 2 large, 3 medium and 1 small gold star. Trace 1 large, 3 medium and 1 small silver star. Add 3/16" turn-under allowance as you cut them out.
  • Cut out an 18" square from the blue border fabric.
  • Make a full-size paper pattern of the quilt blocks placed in 5 rows of 5, eliminating the seam allowances. There is no need to draw the strips in the blocks. Center the paper pattern over the 18" square of blue fabric. Trace the pattern outline on the fabric.
  • Cut out the center of the fabric 3/16" from the pattern line to create the border.

CUTTING                                                                                          Dimensions include seam allowances.

  • Cut 13: bias strips 1/2" x 5", from each red
  • Cut 13: bias strips 1/2" x 5", from each blue
  • Cut 4: 1" x 18" strips, blue, for the binding
  • Cut 12: bias strips 1/2" x 5", silver lamé
  • Cut 13: bias strips 1/2" x 5", gold lamé

DIRECTIONS

  • Begin with the red stripped units. Lay out 8 different 1/2" x 5" red bias strips, a 1/2" x 5" blue bias strip and a 1/2" x 5" gold bias strip in any order you may choose, or refer to the photo for color placement.

  • Lay the first 2 strips right sides together with their long side extending 1/8" over the first line on the paper pattern. Pin the strips in place following 1/8" from the first line. Use as many pins as you need to hold the strips along the curves.

  • Turn the unit to the back and stitch the bias strips together over the first line. Stitch carefully through the paper and over the pins.

  • Flip to the fabric side of the unit. Remove the pins. Finger press the bias strips open.
  • Pin the third bias strips over the second. Flip the unit over and stitch. Remove the pins and press open.

  • Attach all strips in the same manner. Make 13 red units and 12 blue units, each consisting of 10 bias strips.

  • Lay out the red and blue units in 5 rows of 5. Place the red strips horizontally and the blue strips vertically along the rows.

  • Pin, then stitch the units into rows. Pin, then join the rows using a 1/4" seam allowance.

  • Lay the blue border over the completed blocks. Pin in place. Reverse appliqué the border to the blocks by turning the blue fabric under 3/16", using the drawn line as a placement guide.

  • Place gold and silver thread at 2 opposite corners extending along the border fabric and making a 90º turn at the corner. Cut the thread to your desired length. Make 4 rows evenly spread. Hold the thread in place with a couching stitch.

  • Appliqué the stars in the corners, referring to the photo for placement and color.

  • Quilt in the ditch along each bias strip. Quilt stars around the border using the plastic template as the stencil.
