Uncle Sam's Salute

Uncle Sam's Salute

©1990 by Marge Wooters

OVERALL SIZE: 7 1/2" x 9 1/2"

MATERIALS                                  Yardage is estimated for 44" fabric.

  • 1/3 yard muslin for border, flag, beard and backing
  • Remnant of dark fabric, enough to cut 2 strips 1" x 22", or equivalent, for binding
  • Scraps in the following colors/patterns: flesh-color for hands and face; stripe for trousers; red for vest, flag, pieced blocks and border; blue for jacked and pieced blocks; black for hat and shoes; star prints for flag, hatband, and nine-patch block
  • 9" x 11" piece of very thin batting - or regular batting split in half
  • Freezer paper or Grid-Grip™

DIRECTIONS

  • Read all the directions once or twice before you start cutting and sewing.

  • Trace the full-sized pattern onto freezer paper or Grid-Grip™. You should trace on the papery, or unwaxed, side of the paper.
  • Cut apart the pattern pieces - (you may want to do only one block at a time) - and press them carefully (waxed side downward) onto the right side of the appropriate fabric.

  • Cut out the pattern pieces from the fabric, adding seam allowance on all sides as you cut. Marge prefers a 1/8" seam allowance, but you can use a 1/4" seam allowance and trim it to 1/8" after you finish piecing.
  • Sew the pieces together by hand using the "football stitch" illustrated. Make 3 or 4 stitches, then pull the thread, drawing the pieces together. Marge says, "Working from the right side of the fabric facilitates accurate seam alignment when joining small pieces."

3-DIMENSIONAL SECTIONS:

  • Hat Brim: Fold a 1/2"-wide scrap of the black hat fabric in half lengthwise, right side outwards. Insert it into the seam between the hatband and Uncle Sam's face.
  • Sleeves and Hands:  Make a tube by sewing a 1 1/8" x 5" strip of blue jacket fabric right sides together. Use a 1/8" seam. Turn the tube and cut in half, making two 2 1/2" sleeves.
  • Fold a 1" square of flesh-colored fabric in half diagonally, right sides facing, to make a hand. Mark and stitch as shown. Make 2 hands.

  • Insert a hand into one end of each sleeve, turning under the sleeve's raw edge and slipstitching the hand in place.
  • Baste the three-dimensional lower arm sections to the stationary upper arm with the lower arm's seam side up. When the quilting is finished, tack Uncle Sam's right arm in a downward position. Take his left arm to the hat in a salute.

FINISHING

  • Press the quilt top.
  • Mark the top with your quilting design, as needed.
  • Sandwich the top, batting and backing, and baste for quilting.
  • Quilt as desired.
  • Bind using the 1"-wide dark fabric strips.
  • Marge says, "The seam allowance on the outside border should equal the finished width of the binding. The last log of the Log Cabin block will not extend that far, so baste the stitching line of the log to insure accuracy."
