Christmas on the Farm

Fields and Furrows

What if...the Half Log Cabin blocks became the setting for framed focal blocks? That's how Sharyn used them in "Christmas on the Farm," shown in her book Design Challenge: Half Log Cabin Quilts. Sharyn set her half log cabin blocks in a traditional Fields and Furrows set and surrounded them with a pieced border. Stitch 88 blocks using her easy assembly-piecing method described in her book Design Challenge: Half Log Cabin Quilts to make your own full-size Fields and Furrows quilt.

Old Shoes

Challenges and Resolutions

Tiny 3" Shoofly blocks bound new life with Twist 'n Turn. All 16 blocks in "Old Shoes" twist left. Sharyn chose dark values and low intensity fabrics for the framing strips. A single fabric frames each block Here's the quilt that started it all! Sharyn used Twist 'n Turn to frame 144 gift blocks from her adult education students in "Challenges and Resolutions." The blocks were supposed to measure 6" square but actually varied in size. By framing them, Sharyn was able to make them fit together in a quilt.

Design Challenge: Northwind Quilts

Design Challenge: Northwind Quilts

Dozens of fabrics enliven this quilt made using Sharyn's quick and easy sewing technique found Design Challenge: Northwind Quilts. It has a medallion-like look. The outside border is composed of block parts. What if you used only one light fabric with many dark prints of one color? That's what Sharyn did in this quilt made using Sharyn's quick and easy sewing technique found in Design Challenge: Northwind Quilts. She also combined different reds in every block rather than using one red print for each.

Design Challenge: Pyramids Plus

Design Challenge: Pyramids Plus

Sharyn Craig created pastel floating stars by stitching a light and a dark strip from which she cut the pieced diamonds. Then she stitched light triangles to each pieced diamond, placing the dark fabric at the center of the unit. All-light pyramid units lend space to this fun little star design. You can create your own using Sharyn's book Design Challenge: Pyramids Plus. Notice how the Pyramids change in size and overlap as you arrange the basic design units. Sharyn achieved a shifting focus and feeling of transparency in this variation of the Thousand Pyramids design. See more of Sharyn's Pyramid quilts in her book Design Challenge: Pyramids Plus.

Festival Star

LeMoyne Star and Friends

Sharyn used 12 Festival Star blocks (one of her favorites) in a variety of fabrics and colors to make this lively quilt. A simple but dramatic sashing and cornerstone design gives the quilt even more graphic appeal. Stargazing will become one of your favorite activities as you view the 16 exceptional star quilts found in Sharyn's book, LeMoyne Stars Made Easy. A dozen different Star blocks dance before your eyes in this striking sampler. You can make all of them with Sharyn's "Y-seaming" instructions found in LeMoyne Stars Made Easy. Here, twelve 6" LeMoyne Star blocks appear in the setting while four are joined to make a 12" block. Eleven other favorite Star blocks are showcased. The subdued color palette acts as a unifying design element in this sophisticated quilt.
