Shirley Grear of
Santa Rosa, California, designed "Bits and Pieces of America" in
response to Shar's Prairie Patchwork Contest, which required using the 16-piece Pandora's
Box template set. During the Gulf War, she designed this variation of the American flag to
express her patriotic feelings. It won first prize! |
The size of "Desert
Storm Flag Quilt" (4 1/2" x 9 1/2") indicates Donna Collins'
enormous respect for the Allied Forces. She quilted messages such as "God Bless
America" on the white stripes and pieced the red stripes from three shades to give
the flag its wavy appearance. |

| Judith Ann Virgadamo made "A
Spangled Cele*Bear*Tion," (30 1/2" x 36") a light-hearted and
whimsical work. It was exhibited in the Wall Art Category at the 1998 AIQA Show at
Houston's Quilt Festival. |
Lisa Cole-Welby of Clarkston,
Michigan, replaced the floral appliqué border in the original pattern with
three-dimensional flags. Lisa, a registered nurse and the mother of three, named her
version "Bill's Birthday - July 4th" to celebrate both her
husband's birthday and Independence Day. |

"Whig's
Defeat" variation, (©1880-1890, Pennsylvania, 90" x 90"), is
composed of appliquéd and pieced cottons. From the period of the American Centennial in
1876, this quilt is an example of the patriotic works fashioned by all varieties of
artisans of the time, and bears a historical name. |
"Lady Liberty" (©1986,
70" x 70") was Sherry Sunday's first great challenge. It gave her the
opportunity to fine-tune her Perfectly Painless Appliqué technique, learn about seam
allowances when working with miniatures and tackle the Mariner's Compass by machine. |

| Eunice Wien made "Of
Thee I Sing" (32 1/2" x 40") for a red, white and blue challenged
sponsored by Laurie's Loft, a local quilt shop. The quilt was a prizewinner, earning
Eunice a generous gift certificate to use at the shop. It was her first sampler and first
use of embellishments. The Montana quilter says, "I started with three buttons and
one bow!" |
Sally Glaze dug into quilt history
to uncover these star patterns and then gathered the signatures of 50 governors, making "Hail
to the USA: The Governors' Quilt" (69" x 79"), a time capsule for
1992. |

| Linda Packer's "Patriotic
Sampler" (84" square) had dazzled show-goers in California and Japan.
The Little Quilts "Coming Home" block in the center is surrounded by a sea of
smaller ones made by quilters in her Swap-A-Block group. Composed of so many
reproduction fabrics, this quilt has a touch of yesteryear. |
Liane meets monthly with a group of
friends, not all of whom are quilters. She demonstrated the freezer paper technique for
appliqué to the group and each member stitched a block from scraps. At the end of the
evening Liane won the drawing for the blocks and used them in her group contest entry, "We
Love America". She loves the variety of hearts that resulted from members'
designs. |
