Cynthia Fuelling
of Fredonia, Arizona, machine pieced her "Patriotic Pinwheel"
quilt (77 1/2" x 92 1/2") using a pattern for Clay's Choice, a
traditional block that was her quilt guild's monthly challenge. She loved the simplicity
of the blocks and set them together with a red print to add sparkle. Nearly 35 different
prints keep the quilt lively and fun. It was hand quilted by Connie Black who is also from
Fredonia. |
"Spirit of '76"
(25" x 30"), made by Toby Lischko of Manchester, Missouri, was an entry
in the 1996 Miniatures from the Heart Contest. Toby's inspiration came from a large quilt
assembled by her quilt guild.

| "Memories for Maureen"
(60" x 60") by Barbara Tricarico of Vienna, Virginia. Barbara made this
quilt for her friend Maureen Altman. She designed it to accommodate the 80 signed muslin
triangles Maureen had collected from friends all over the world. The patriotic colors are
Maureen's favorites. Barbara says, "In my mind, friendship quilts are the best
quilts!" |
Laverne Hart got her start in
quiltmaking in 1994. Now retired, she had the time to make "Welcome to Atlanta"
(54" x 70") to contribute to the Olympic Gift of Quilts - only the
third quilt she's ever made! Fellow Gwinnen Quilters' Guild member Marge LaBenne taught
this versatile pattern, Mary's Triangles, in a class. Come of Laverne's invigorating
fabric choices of stripes and patriotic prints came from a guild fabric trade; others were
purchased. This quilt's new home will be with the National Olympic Committee of
Guinea-Bissau. |

When funds were
needed to build a veterans memorial, Lynne Blackwell of Ottumwa, Iowa, stepped forward!
Signatures were collected from national, state and local dignitaries, veterans and their
families for "Battleground Star"
(91" square). Each participant donated $1 for the privilege of signing a
square, then Lynne carefully pieced them all together. When the quilt was auctioned to
raise additional funds, she was surprised and delighted to learn the lucky (and
thoughtful) bidder was her own husband! |
To commemorate the 75th anniversary
of the League of Women Voters of the United States, Becky Wallace of Bartlesville,
Oklahoma, and her friends Deborah Langley, Julia Taylor and Virginia Barnes, stitched "Ballot Box" (62
1/2" x 74 1/4"). The white diamonds of the Baby Blocks contain the signatures of
the group's current members. Make your own version of this patriotic quilt. |

| Red and white Sawtooth
Stars appear to twinkle in "Independence
& Justice" (62" x 72") which is set in Sharyn Craig's Twist 'n Turn
technique. Mickey Depre of Oak Lawn, Illinois, chose the stars when it was her turn
to name the Block-of-the-Month that would be made by her quilt guild. |
