Meet
Bea Yurkerwich
Needlework and art have been part of Bea Yurkerwich’s life as long as she
can remember. Her early occupations include map coloring and drafting survey
maps. As a hobby she painted needlework canvases of birds, seashells, and
flowers for local needlework shops. Bead won numerous awards for her oil and
acrylic paintings, crochet, knitting, cross-stitch, macramé, ceramics, and
gem-bead necklaces. But once Bea taught herself how to quilt with the help
of books and quilting magazines, it quickly became her favorite creative
outlet.
After making
several traditional quilts, she went on to design and make original quilts,
many with variations of traditional blocks. Among her many designs, several
of which have been published in magazines, flowers have been a recurrent
theme. She designed the large floral patterns in her book “Fabulous Flower
Quilt” with what she calls “Gentle Geometrics.” This technique gets its name
because she juxtaposed straight lines at slight angles to create the
illusion of curves. It may be difficult to imagine that the leaves, stem,
and flower of an iris could be rendered without a single curve, but hers is,
and with all its gracefulness.
So get ready to
take an enjoyable stroll through Bea’s “pattern garden.” You’re in for such
a treat that’s so special you’ll practically be able to “smell the roses.”

"Tulip Whirl" (56" square) The whirlwind of
brightly colored tulips and Pinwheels stirs the imagination. A secondary
design of lighter Pinwheels is formed when four blocks are set together. |

The radiant blooms of "Golden Sunflower"
(54" square) are like an inviting smile. This cheerful wallhanging always
reminds me of summer's warm sunny days. |

Enchanting irises, in shades of lavender, orchid, light
blue, and yellow, are one of the most favored garden flowers around the
world. Make your own "Iris Garden" (60" x 84") using any colors you
would find in irises. |
