Meet
Lila Lee Jones
by Jack Braunstein
While Lila Lee Jones's background is
impressive - she taught English for 25 years and was awarded fellowships by
the Fulbright Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities - she
considers her quiltmaking experience to be equally important. Although she
comes from a long line of quilters, she was well into her adulthood when she
started quilting. The first quilt she worked on was one she and her husband
had purchased to sell in their antique shop. She recalls, "I had so much fun
quilting it that I began searching for more quilt tops to rescue."
The more quilt tops she completed, the
more hesitant she became in parting with them. Thus, the Drexel, Missouri
quilter started her antique quilt collection. Although Lila Lee intended to
retire by now, she continues to travel and sell antiques. Wherever she is,
however, she finds plenty of time to quilt.
Some of Lila Lee's treasured quilts
can be found in her book,
Heartland Quilts: Rescued Treasures from the Midwest. The quilts
featured in this book are now on display in our
Gallery.
