Previous Block of the Month:    Aunt Mary's   Double Irish Chain

Make this classic red and white block for a holiday pillow, or make a bunch for a festive quilt.

Made in only 2 colors, "Aunt Mary's Double Irish Chain" makes a bold statement. According to Barbara Brackman's Encyclopedia of Quilt Patterns, this design is attributed to Clara Stone who wrote for Practical Needlework: Quilt Patterns in the early 1900s. Try it in blue and white for a classic look or bright colors for a more contemporary flair.

BLOCK SIZE: 10" square

MATERIALS

  • Red print at least 12 1/2" square
  • Off-white at least 12 1/2" square

CUTTING                                                                                                  Dimensions include a 1/4" seam allowance.

  • Cut 1: 8 3/4" square, red print, then cut it in quarters diagonally to yield 4 large triangles. You will use 2.
  • Cut 4: 3 3/4" squares, red print, then cut them in quarters diagonally to yield 16 small triangles. You will use 14.
  • Cut 1: 8 3/4" square, off-white, then cut it in quarters diagonally to yield 4 large triangles. You will use 2.
  • Cut 4: 3 3/4" squares, off-white, then cut them in quarters diagonally to yield 16 small triangles. You will use 14.

DIRECTIONS

  • Sew a small red print triangle to a small off-white triangle to make a pieced unit, as shown. Make 12.

  • Sew 3 pieced units together to make a pieced strip, as shown. Make 4.
  • Sew a small off-white print triangle to a pieced strip, as shown. Make 2. Set them aside.

  • Sew a small red print triangle to each of the remaining pieced strips, as shown.
  • Sew the pieced strips to the large triangles to make large pieced triangles, as shown. Make 2 of each.
  • Lay out the large pieced triangles and sew them into pairs. Join the pairs to complete the block.
