Previous Block of the Month: Arkansas Meadow Rose

Appliqué this perky flower in your favorite colors.

Arkansas Meadow Rose was first published in The Kansas City Star in October of 1935. Try a flower using five different prints for the petals, using '30s prints, or plaids, or try some new hand-dyed fabrics. This block has so many possibilities!

BLOCK SIZE: 10" square

MATERIALS

  • Fat eighth (11" x 18") light print for the background
  • Pink print at least 6" x 7 1/2"
  • Piece of green at least 8" square
  • Piece of pink at least 8" square
  • Yellow scrap at least 2" square

CUTTING

The petal pattern (link below) is full size and includes a 1/4" seam allowance. The leaf and flower center patterns are full size and do not include a turn-under allowance. Make templates for the patterns. Trace around the petal template on the right side of the fabric and cut the fabric pieces out on the line. Trace around the leaf and flower center templates on the wrong side of the fabric and add a 1/4" seam allowance as you cut the fabric pieces out.

  • Cut 1: 8 1/4" x 11" rectangle, light print
  • Cut 5: petals, pink print
  • Cut 1: flower center, yellow
  • Cut 1: 1" x 3 1/4" strip, green, for the stem
  • Cut 2: leaves, green
  • Cut 2: 2 5/8" squares, green
  • Cut 1: 3 3/4" square, green, then cut it in quarters diagonally to yield 4 triangles
  • Cut 1: 3 3 /8" square, pink, then cut it in half diagonally to yield 2 large triangles
  • Cut 1: 3 3/4" square, pink, then cut it in quarters diagonally to yield 4 small triangles. You will use 2.
  • Cut 2: 2 5/8" squares, pink

DIRECTIONS

  • Press both long edges of the 1" x 3 1/4" green stem 1/4" toward the wrong side.
  • Fold the 8 1/4" x 11" background rectangle in half crosswise and crease the fold to mark the center.
  • Pin the stem to the rectangle, aligning one end of the stem with the edge of the rectangle and centering the stem on the crease. Appliqué the stem.
  • Sew 2 petals together, stopping and backstitching at the dot, as shown.

  • In the same manner, sew the remaining petals to the pair to make a flower. Press the seam allowances open.
  • Center the flower on the rectangle, covering the end of the stem. Appliqué the flower, turning under the edges of the petals as you stitch.
  • Appliqué the flower center on the flower.
  • Appliqué a leaf on each side of the stem.
  • Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of each 2 5/8" pink square.
  • Place a marked square on a 2 5/8" green square, right sides together. Sew 1/4" away from both sides of the marked line. Make 2.

  • Cut the squares on the drawn lines to yield 4 pieced squares. You will use 3. Press the seam allowances open.
  • Lay out the 3 pieced squares, green triangles, and the small pink triangles. Sew the squares and triangles into sections, as shown. Join the sections.

  • Sew the large pink triangles to the bottom corners to complete the bottom section.
  • Center and stitch the bottom section to the flower section. Trim the light background rectangle to square the block.
