Previous Block of the Month: Arrows
This graphic block will make a show-stopping quilt!
Arrows block (12" x 12"), stitched by Joanne Nolt, is adapted from a
drawing by Dutch artist M. C. Escher.
BLOCK SIZE: 12" square
MATERIALS
Yardage is estimated for 44" fabric.
- 7" x 11" piece of white
- 11" square of medium
- 11" square of dark
CUTTING
Dimensions include 1/4" seam allowance.
- Cut 2: A, medium, or cut 3 3/8" squares
- Cut 2: C, medium, or cut a 6 7/8" square in half diagonally
- Cut 2: A, dark, or cut two 3 3/8" squares
- Cut 2: C, dark, or cut a 6 7/8" square in half diagonally
- Cut 4: B, white
DIRECTIONS
 |
- Stitch the dark and medium A's into a Four Patch, as shown.
|
 |
- Stitch B to a short side of C, as shown. Repeat for all 4 B's and C's.
|
 |
- Lay out the 4 pieced units around the Four Patch. Stitch one pieced unit to the Four
Patch with a short seam. Sew with the Four Patch on top. Begin sewing at the corner where
the corner of the Four Patch and the corner of the other pieced unit meet. Do not stitch
the entire length of the Four Patch. Leave about 1 1/2" unsewn - that will make
sewing the 4th seam easier.
|
 |
- Stitch the remaining piece units, in order around the Four Patch. When they are all in
place, stitch the remainder of the first seam, to complete the block.
- Group multiple blocks for eye opening designs. Note how the light B pieces form stars or
pinwheels where the corners of the blocks meet.
