Stitching the binding to the quilt

NOTE: After quilting and removing the basting, trim the excess batting and backing to within 1/4" of the quilt top. You'll use a 1/2" seam to stitch the binding, measuring from the edge of the batting and backing. (#6)

• Beginning several inches from one corner and leaving about 6" of the binding free, pin the binding strip on the right side of the quilt so that the raw edges are even with those of the quilt top. (#7)

NOTE: Although it is not essential, for ease in stitching binding to the quilt, we recommend that you use a walking foot. This attachment helps to keep all layers secure as you sew. The manufacturers of your sewing machine probably makes a walking foot that fits your machine. Inexpensive, generic brands are also available.

• Stitch the binding to the quilt, using a 1/2" seam measured from the edge of the batting and backing. When you reach the corner, stop exactly 1/2" from the edge of the backing. Backstitch, clip the threads and remove the quilt from the sewing machine. (#8)

• Fold the binding up and away from the quilt, creating a fold with a 45º angle. (#9)

• Keeping the angled fold secure, fold the binding back down on itself. This fold should be even with the edge of the quilt top. (#10)

• Beginning at the fold, stitch the binding to the quilt and stop at the next corner, as before. (#11)
