    Black-eyed Susan

Previous Block of the Month: Black-eyed Susan

Stitch up a summertime favorite!

"Black-eyed Susan" (10" square) is a design that appeared in Capper's Weekly, a periodical from Capper Publications, which has published the weekly newspaper since 1879. The pattern is probably a design by Louise Fowler Roote, who wrote her column under the name of Kate Marchbanks from 1927 through 1935.

BLOCK SIZE: 10" square

MATERIALS

  • Gold print at least 11" square
  • Piece of muslin at least 8 1/2" x 14"
  • Green print at least 4" x 8"
  • Black or dark brown print scrap at least 2"

CUTTING                                                                                                Pattern pieces A, B and C are full size and include a 1/4" seam allowance. Appliqué pattern piece D is full size and does not include a seam allowance. Make a template for each of the pattern pieces and cut them out. Trace around template D on the right side of the fabric and add a 1/8" to 3/16" seam allowance when cutting the piece out.

  • Cut 8: A, gold print
  • Cut 8: B, muslin
  • Cut 4: C, green print; or cut two 3 7/8" squares, then cut them in half diagonally
  • Cut 1: D, black or dark brown print

PIECING

Susan, pattern 1
  • Make marks on the wrong side of each A and B where indicated by dots on the pattern piece.
  • Place a muslin B on a gold print A, right sides together, aligning the center dots. Pin at the dot.
Susan, pattern 2
  • Align the remaining dots and place a pin at each.
  • Sew the muslin B to the gold print A, keeping the raw edges aligned as you sew. Press the seam allowance toward the A. Make 8.
Susan, pattern 3
  • Sew 2 units together to make a quarter-block. Make 4.
Susan, pattern 4
  • Sew 2 quarter-blocks together to make a half-block.
  • Join the half-blocks.
Susan, pattern 5
  • Sew a green print C to each corner.
  • Appliqué the black or dark brown print D to the center to complete the block.
