Previous Block of the Month:       Blazing Star

Here's a twelve-inch block that will

add a blaze of brightness to your quiltmaking.

Barbara Brackman's Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns lists this distinctive block as Blazing Star.  The pattern was first published over 70 years ago in the Kansas City Star - and it's just as fresh and exciting today as it was in 1930! Depending on the fabrics you use, Blazing Star could become springtime blossoms, exploding fireworks, colorful autumn leaves or a Christmas poinsettia.  Try a block in your favorite colors!

BLOCK SIZE: 12" square

MATERIALS

Yardage is estimate for 44" fabric.

  • Scraps in at least 2 colors
  • 1/6 yard contrasting color for background fabric

CUTTING

Patterns are full size and include a 1/4" seam allowance.

  • Cut 4: A, first color
  • Cut 4: A, second color
  • Cut 8: B, background color
  • Cut 4: C, background color
  • Cut 8: D, first color
  • Cut 8: D, second color
  • Cut 8: E, background color
  • Cut 4: F, background color

DIRECTIONS

Begin by joining an A diamond of the first color to an A diamond of the second color.  Make 4 pairs of A diamonds exactly alike.

Join the pairs of diamonds to make half stars.  Then join the halves to complete the eight-pointed star.

Stitch a B triangle in all 8 spaces between the star points.

Take a D diamond of the first color and a D diamond of the second color.  Join them together as you did with the A diamonds.  Make 8 identical pairs of D's.

Taking 2 of the D diamond pairs, join them together as shown. Stitch an F square in the corner and a E triangle in each of the other 2 spaces.  Make 4 pieced units exactly like this.  These will be the corner units for the Blazing Star block.
Stitch one of the corner units on one side of the eight-pointed star. Stitch a C rectangle on the side next to it, then a corner unit on the side next to that.  Continue alternating C rectangles and corner units until the block is completed.
