Wintergreen
A 12-inch block from Kay Rhodes’ wonderful “Christmas Memory” quilt
top. The traditional pattern names of Honey Bee and Blue Blazes just don’t
seem to do justice to this pretty block all dressed up in its holiday best.
So we’re calling it Wintergreen, after the hardy North American shrub with
its aromatic leaves and bright red berries. Perhaps it will become part of a
favorite Christmas memory in your home!
Kaye Rhodes of Annandale, Virginia, began stitching
blocks for her “Christmas Memories” quilt top (62” x77”) in 1978 – and
completed it 12 years later in 1990. Some good things just can’t be hurried!
Kaye made the top for her son, Patrick.
Block Size: 12” square
Materials
Yardage is estimated for 44” fabric.
- Piece of red print at least 6” x 8”
- Piece of green print at least 6” square
- 1/8 yard white or light print fabric
- Piece of green solid, 4 ½” x 22”
- Scrap of red solid at least 3” square
Cutting
Pattern Pieces are full size. All dimensions given include ¼”
seam allowance. Mark appliqué pieces on the right side of the fabric and add
3/16” to ¼” turn-under allowance all around when cutting them out.
- Cut 5: 2 1.2” squares, red
- Cut 4: 2 ½” squares, green
- Cut 2: 3 ½” x 6 ½” rectangles, white print
- Cut 12: leaves, green solid
- Cut 4: berries, red solid
NOTE: If you wish to save time and template plastic,
you can use a penny for the berry pattern.
Directions
- Stitch the 2 ½” red and green squares alternately in
3 rows as shown. Press seam allowances toward the darker fabric. Stitch
the rows together, making a 6 ½” nine-patch block.
- Sew the 3 ½” x 6 ½” white print rectangles to 2
opposite sides of the nine-patch block. Press the seam allowance toward
the white print fabric. If a “ghost” of the colored seam allowance shows
through to the front of the block, trim the colored side only to about
3/16”.
- Sew the 3 ½” x 12 ½” white print rectangles to the 2
remaining sides of the nine-patch block. Press the seams as before. Trim
the seam allowances if necessary.
- Using you favorite appliqué method, stitch 3 green
leaves at each corner of the nine-patch, where the inner points of the 3
leaves meet.
- If you wish to trim the excess fabric from behind
the appliquéd leaves, do so now. Turn the block over. Working from the
back, clip carefully ¼” inside the appliqué stitches around each leaf.
- Press the finished block right side down over a
clean towel. This will keep the iron from making shinny spots on the
appliqués.
- Happy memories!
