Previous Block of the Month:

Debra's Block Party
Berry Wreath

Debra Feece designed "Berry Wreath" especially for a Christmas issue of Quiltworks Today. Make one block using this beautiful wreath design and turn it into a pillow for the holidays or make more for a stunning wallhanging.

Block Size: 10" square

Materials

  • 11" square of background fabric

  • Assorted green print scraps
  • Red print scrap
  • Freezer paper
  • Fine point permanent marker

Directions
The appliqué patterns are full size and do not include a seam allowance. Trace the patterns on freezer paper, leaving 1/2" between them and cut the pieces out on the lines. Trace the large leaf 8 times, the small leaf 4 times, and the berries 12 times.

  1. Fold a 9" square of paper in quarters diagonally. Using a fine point black marker, trace the patterns on each quarter of the paper, aligning the dashed lines with the folds of the paper.
  2. Center the paper pattern, right side down, on the wrong side of the 11" square of background fabric. Hold it in place with a couple small pieces of masking tape or a few pins.
  3. Turn the fabric and pattern over and, using a pencil, lightly trace the design on the right side if the fabric. NOTE: Trace slightly inside the pattern lines to ensure the pencil marks will be covered by the appliqué shapes.
  4. Press the leaf shapes, shiny side down, on the right side of assorted green print scraps. Trace around the edge of each paper shape. Cut out the fabric shapes 1/8" to 3/16" outside the traced lines.
  5. Press the berry circles on the wrong side of the red print scrap. Cut out the berries 1/8" outside the drawn lines.
  6. Remove the paper from the leaves and pin them to the background squares. Appliqué them in place, turning the edges under as you go.
  7. Sew a running stitch around a berry in the center of the turn-under allowance, as shown. Leave a tail of thread at the beginning and at the end.
  8. Pull the thread tails to gather the fabric around the freezer paper circle. Tie the ends in a knot.
  9. Appliqué the berry to the background square, stopping about 3/4" of the way around the circle. Using tweezers, remove the paper then continue4 stitching the berry to the background.
  10. Appliqué the remaining berries in the same manner.
  11. Press the block on the wrong side then trim it to 10 1/2" square.
