    Carolina Favorite

Previous Block of the Month: Carolina Favorite

Use prints with strong contrast for graphic appeal.

"Carolina Favorite" (10" square) is an unusual block design originally sold by Old Chelsea Station Needlecraft Service. OCS, a mail-order company which begain in 1933, offered single full-size patterns through the mail. Most of their quilt patterns are no longer available.

BLOCK SIZE: 10" square

MATERIALS                                                                                        

  • Medium print at least 7" x 12"
  • Dark print at least 7" x 12"
  • 12" square of muslin
  • Freezer paper

CUTTING                                                                                                           Pattern pieces are full-size and include a 1/4" seam allowance, as do all dimensions given. Make a template from each of the pattern pieces.

  • Cut 2: A, medium print
  • Cut 2: AR, medium print
  • Cut 2: B, medium print
  • Cut 2: C, medium print
  • Cut 2: A, dark print
  • Cut 2: AR, dark print
  • Cut 2: B, dark print
  • Cut 2: C, dark print
  • Cut 4: 5 3/4" squares, muslin

PREPARATION

  • Trace the patterns on the dull side of the freezer paper. Trace pattern A 4 times, pattern A Reversed (AR) 4 times, pattern B 4 times and pattern C 4 times. Cut them out. Cut the seam allowance off the curved edges of each piece.

Carolina Favorite, pattern 1

  • Place a freezer paper A, shiny side down, on the wrong side of a dark print A, aligning the straight edge, as shown. Press to adhere the freezer paper to the dark print A.

Carolina Favorite, pattern 2

  • Press the seam allowance of the convex curve toward the wrong side along the edge of the freezer paper. Repeat for the remaining A's and the AR's. Set them aside.

Carolina Favorite, pattern 3

  • Place a freezer paper B, shiny side down, on the wrong side of a dark print B, aligning the straight edges, as shown. Press to adhere the freezer paper to the fabric.
  • Press the seam allowances of the curved edges toward the wrong side. Repeat for the remaining B's.
  • Place a freezer paper C, shiny side down, on the wrong side of a dark print C, aligning the straight edges. Press to adhere the freezer paper to the fabric.
  • Press the seam allowances of the curved edges toward the wrong side. Repeat for the remaining C's.

PIECING

Carolina Favorite, pattern 4

For each quarter-block:
  • Remove the freezer paper from a dark print A. Pin it, right side up, to a 5 3/4" muslin square, 3/4" from the corner, as shown.

Carolina Favorite, pattern 5

  • Appliqué the A to the muslin square along the pressed edge.
  • Remove the freezer paper from a dark print AR. Pin it to the muslin square, 3/4" from the opposite corner, as shown.

Carolina Favorite, pattern 6

  • Appliqué the AR to the muslin square along the pressed edge.
  • Remove the freezer paper from a medium print B. Pin the B to the same muslin square, aligning the raw edges. Appliqué it in place along the pressed edges.

Carolina Favorite, pattern 7

  • Turn the unit over and trim the muslin 1/4" inside the stitching line, as shown.

Carolina Favorite, pattern 8

  • Remove the freezer paper from a dark print C. Pin it to the unit, aligning the straight edges.Appliqué it in place along the pressed edges to complete a quarter-block. Make 2.

Carolina Favorite, pattern 9

  • Make 2 quarter-blocks using the medium print A's, AR's and C's and the dark print B's.
Carolina Favorite, pattern 10
  • Join the 4 quarter-blocks, referring to the photo, as necessary.
  • Trim the block to 10 1/2" square.
