Double X or Old Maids Puzzle
Create two different looks from the
same pieces.
Block
Size:10" square
Materials
-
First print, at least 10" x 12", for
the background
-
Second print, at least 6" square,
for the large triangles
-
Third print, at least 3 1/2" x 7",
for the small triangles
Cutting
Dimensions include a 1/4" seam allowance.
- Cut 4: 3" squares, background print.
- Cut 3: 3 1/2 squares, background print.
- Cut 2: 3 3/8" squares, background print, then cut
them in half diagonally to yield 4 triangles.
- Cut 1: 5 7/8" square, second print then cut in half
diagonally to yield 2 triangles.
- Cut 3: 3 1/2" squares, third print.
Directions

Draw a diagonal line from corner to
corner on the wrong side of each 3 1/2" background square.

Place a marked square on a 3 1/2"
print square, right sides together. Sew 1/4" away from the drawn line on
both sides. Make 3.

Cut the squares on the drawn lines
to yield 6 small pieced squares. Press the seam allowance open. Trim each
unit to 3" square.

Sew 2 small pieced squares and two
3" background squares together to make a Four Patch. Make 2.

Sew 2 background print triangles to
a small pieced square to make a pieced triangle. Make 2. Press the seam
allowances toward the triangles.

Sew a pieced triangle to a print
triangle to make a large pieced square. Make 2. Press the seam allowances
toward the print triangle.

Lay out the Four Patches and large
pieced squares in either arrangement, as shown. Sew the units together to
complete the block.
