Previous Block of the Month:        Folk Art Style      House Block

by Debra Feece

If you like folk art, you'll love making this block.

  • GET READY - choose the theme, day or night, and your favorite scraps.
  • GET SET - choose your setting style, straight or on-point, and fuse the pieces.
  • GO! - Start stitching.

BLOCK SIZE: 5" square

MATERIALS

  • Assorted scraps of light, medium and dark prints
  • Fusible web
  • Embroidery floss in assorted colors to match or contrast with the print scraps

CUTTING                                                                                                         The appliqué patterns are full-size and do not need a seam allowance. Trace each pattern on the paper side of the fusible web. Rough cut around the traced shapes. Following the manufacturer's directions, fuse the web to the wrong side of the fabric scraps. Cut the fused web pieces out on the drawn lines.

  • Cut 1: 6" square, light or dark print background fabric

DIRECTIONS

  • Lay the appliqué pieces, fusible side down, on the right side of the 6" background square in this order: house, chimney, roof, tree and star(s). Overlap the chimney and the house with the roof, using the dashed lines on the pattern as a guide. Rearrange the pieces until you like the placement, keeping their outer edges at least 3/4" from the raw edges of the square. NOTE: You may want to try a straight setting and on point setting to decide which you like better.
  • Follow the manufacturer's directions, fuse the fabric pieces to the square.
  • Fuse the door and windows to the house.
  • With 2 strands of matching or contrasting embroidery floss, embroider around each piece with a buttonhole stitch.
  • Trim the block to 5 1/2" square, keeping the appliqué centered.
