Previous Block of the Month:      Folk Art Style

Heart-in-Hand Block

by Debra Feece

No Folk Art Sampler would be complete without a Heart-in-Hand block.

BLOCK SIZE: 5" square

MATERIALS

  • 6" square of background fabric
  • Scarp at least 3 1/2" x 5" for the hand
  • Assorted print scraps for hearts
  • Fusible web
  • Embroidery floss to match or contrast with the print fabrics

CUTTING

The appliqué patterns are full size and do not need a seam allowance. Trace each pattern on the paper side of the fusible web. Rough cut around the traced shapes. Following the manufacturer's directions, fuse the web to the wrong side of the fabric scraps. Cut the fused pieces out on the line.

  • Cut 1: 6" square, light or dark background fabric

DIRECTIONS

  • Lay the hand appliquéd piece, fusible side down, on the right side of the 6" background square. Place a heart on the palm of the hand and additional hearts on the background square as you please. Rearrange the pieces until you like the placement, keeping their outer edges at least 3/4" from the raw edges of the square.
  • Following the manufacturer's directions, fuse the fabric pieces to the square.
  • With 2 strands of matching or contrasting embroidery floss, embroider around each piece with a buttonhole stitch.
  • Trim the block to 5 1/2" square, keeping the appliqué centered.
