Full Blown Tulip

    Make this cherry block and think spring!

"Full Blown Tulip" was originally published under the name of Laura Wheeler in the 1930s. Patterns for this traditional block and many others were mailordered through a Post Office box in New York from the Old Chelsea Station Needlecraft Service.

BLOCK SIZE: 10" square

MATERIALS

  • Purple print at least 8 1/2" square
  • Gold print at least 12" square
  • Yellow print at least 10" x 12"

CUTTING                                                                                           Dimensions include a 1/4" seam allowance. R = Reverse.

  • Cut 4: A, purple print
  • Cut 4: D, pruple print; or cut a 5 1/4" square then cut it in quarters diagonally to yield 4 triangles
  • Cut 4: B, yellow print
  • Cut 4: BR, yellow print
  • Cut 4: C, gold print
  • Cut 4: CR, gold print

DIRECTIONS

Full Blown Tulip, pattern 1 Lay out a purple print A, yellow print B and BR, purple print D and a gold print C and CR.

NOTE: Press seam allowances in the direction indicated by the arrows in the diagrams.

Sew the purple print A to the yellow print B, stopping and backstitching at the dot, as shown.

Full Blown Tulip, pattern 3 Sew the gold print C to the opposite side of the B. Place the pieced unit back in the layout.

Sew the purple print D to the yellow print BR, stopping and backstitching at the dot, as shown.
Full Blown Tulip, pattern 5 Sew the gold print CR to the unit, as shown.
Full Blown Tulip, pattern 6 Pin the pieced units together, as shown. Sew to the dot and put the needle down through the dot. Lift the presser foot. Realign the edges and continue sewing the seam to complete a quarter block. Make 4.
Full Blown Tulip, pattern 7 Sew the quarter blocks into pairs and join the pairs to complete the block. Press the seam allowance open to reduce bulk in the center of the block.
