Flannel Fever
by Cyndi Hershey

Cyndi Hershey used the Sister's Choice block to make "Flannel Fever." Cyndi recommends choosing quilt blocks that utilize simple shapes such as squares and rectangles when working with flannels.

Quilt Size: 42 1/2" x 56 1/2"
Block Size:
10” square

Materials
Yardage is based on 44" flannel fabric with a usable width of 42".

  • Fat quarter (18" x 22") each of 6 different light prints, for the block backgrounds.

  • Fat quarter each of 6 different dark prints, for the blocks.

  • 1 yard red plaid for the plain alternate blocks.

  • 1 1/8 yards green print for the setting and corner triangles.

  • 1/2 yard dark green print for the binding. (NOTE: You may prefer to bind the quilt with regular cotton fabric.)

  • 3 yards backing fabric

  • 47" x 61" piece of batting (optional)

Cutting
Dimensions include a 1/4" seam allowance. Cut the lengthwise strips before cutting smaller pieces from that fabric.

For each of 12 blocks:

  • Cut 4: 2 1/2"squares, light prints

  • Cut 4: 2 1/2" x 6 1/2" strips, light prints

  • Cut 13: 2 1/2" squares, medium or dark print, for the star

  • Cut 4: 2 1/2" squares, one contrasting print

Also

  • Cut 6: 10 1/2" squares, red plaid

  • Cut 3: 15 1/2" squares, green print, the cut them in quarters diagonally to yield 12 setting triangles. You will use 10.

  • Cut 2: 8 1/2" squares, green print, them cut them in half diagonally to yield 4 corner triangles.

  • Cut 6: 2 1/2" x 44" strips, dark green print, for the binding

Directions
For each block:

  • Lay out five 2 1/2" medium or dark print squares and four 2 1/2" contrasting print squares, as shown. Stitch the squares into rows. Press seam allowances toward the contrasting print. Join the rows to make a Nine Patch.

  • Draw a diagonal line from the corner to corner on the wrong side of each remaining 2 1/2" medium or dark print square.

  • Place a marked square on one end of a 2 1/2" x 6 1/2" light print rectangle, right sides together. Stitch on the drawn line. Press the square toward the corner. Trim the seam allowance 1/4" beyond the stitching.

  • In the same manner, stitch a marked 2 1/2" dark print to the other end of the 2 1/2" dark print square to the other end of the 2 1/2" x 6 1/2" light print rectangle, as shown. Make 4.

  • Stitch units to opposite sides of the Nine Patch, as shown. Press the seam allowances toward the Nine Patch.

  • Stitch 2 1/2" light print squares to the ends of each remaining unit, as shown. to make side units. Press the seam allowances toward the light print squares.

  • Stitch the side units to the remaining sides of the Nine Patch to make a Sister's Choice block. Make 12.

Assembly

  • Referring to the quilt photo for placement, lay out the blocks, 10 1/2" red plaid squares, and the green print setting and corner triangles. Stitch them into diagonal rows and join the rows. NOTE: The corner triangles are oversized to allow for trimming.

  • Trim the corners to square the quilt.

  • Finish the quilt as described in the general directions, using the 2 1/2" x 44" dark green print strips for the binding.
