Previous Block of the Month:

Block Party by Debra Feece

Garret Windows

This block has so many possibilities.

According to Barbara Brackman’s Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns, “Garret Windows (10 ½” square) is a Nancy Cabot design from 1938. It was one of many mail-order patterns sold through a syndicated column in the Chicago Tribune in the ‘30’s. Play with different color ideas or make the block scrappy.

 Block Size: (10 ½” square)

Materials

  • Navy print at least 5 ½” square

  •  Piece of muslin at least 12” square

  • Red print at least 10” square

Cutting

Dimensions include a ¼” seam allowance.

  • Cut 4: 2 5/8” squares, navy print, then cut them in half diagonally to yield 8 triangles

  •  Cut 4: 4 3/8” squares, muslin, then cut them in half diagonally to yield 8 triangles

  • Cut 4: 2 ¼” squares, muslin

  • Cut 8: 2 ¼” x 4 ¼” rectangles, red print

 Directions

  • Sew a navy print triangle to a 2 ¼” muslin square, as shown. Make 4.

  • Chain sew a remaining navy triangle to the opposite side if each muslin square to make 4 center units, as shown. Press the seam allowances toward the triangles.

  • Sew a 2 ¼” x 4 ¼” red print rectangle to a center unit, as shown. Chain sew red print rectangles to each remaining unit in the same manner.

  • Sew a 2 1/4" x 4 1/4" red print rectangle to the opposite side if each unit in the same manner. Press seam allowance toward the rectangles.

  • Align the edges of a ruler with the edge of a navy triangle and use other lines on the ruler to keep the unit straight, as shown. Trim the rectangle.

  • Trim all of the remaining red print rectangles in the same manner.

  • Sew 2 muslin triangles to a unit to complete a quarter block. Make 4.

  • Referring to the photo, lay out the quarter-blocks in either arrangement. Sew them into pairs and join the pairs to complete the block.

There are no full-size pattern pieces available for the County Fair block.
