Previous Block of the Month: Grandmother's Choice

A traditional block to showcase your favorite prints.

Lucy J. Kise from Hope, New Jersey stitched these Grandmother's Choice blocks, for a friendship circle activity with her local guild. She also belongs to the Feedsack Club.

BLOCK SIZE: 10" square

MATERIALS

  • Scrap of print fabric at least 7 1/2" x 10"
  • Scrap of muslin at least 6" x 16"

CUTTING                                                                                        

  • Cut 4: A, print; or cut two 4 7/8" squares, then cut each in half diagonally
  • Cut 5: B, print; or cut 2 1/2" squares
  • Cut 8: C, muslin; or cut four 2 1/2" squares
  • Cut 4: D, muslin; or cut 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" strips

PIECING

Choice, pattern 1

  • Sew a print B between muslin C's to make a pieced triangle. Make 4.

Choice, pattern 2

  • Sew a pieced triangle to a print A to make a pieced square. Make 4.

Choice, pattern 3

  • Sew a muslin D between 2 pieced squares to make a block unit, as shown. Make 2.

Choice, pattern 4

  • Sew a print B between 2 muslin D's to make a center strip.
  • Sew the center strip between the block units to complete a Grandmother's Choice block.
