Golden Glow

Previous Block of the Month: Golden Glow

Stitch up a sunny day!

In honor of Traditional Quiltworks' 50th issue, what better choice than Golden Glow as a Block Party feature? The pattern was first published during the Depression years, when an extra dose of sunshine was especially welcome. It combines piecing and appliqué for a distinctive look.

BLOCK SIZE: 12" square

MATERIALS                                                                                               Yardage is estimated for 44" fabric.

  • 13" square of 3/8 yard white print, for the background
  • Scraps of yellow and gold prints - or use 1/8 yard
  • 4 1/4" square of navy
  • 4" x 6" scrap of red
  • Heat-resistant template plastic for the C template - or use cardboard
  • Spray starch (optional)
  • Thread to match the appliqués

CUTTING                                                                                                            The A and B pattern pieces are full size and include a 1/4" seam allowance, as do all dimensions given. The C pattern piece has no seam allowance. Make the template from cardboard or heat-resistant plastic. When you cut the C piece from fabric, add 1/4" all around for turn-under allowance.

  • Cut 1: 13" square, white print
  • Cut 8: A, red
  • Cut 8: B, yellow scraps
  • Cut 1: C, navy

PIECING

Glow, pattern 1 Stitch an A to the left side of each B piece. Press the seam allowance toward B.
Glow, pattern 2 Stitch the pieced units together to make a ring. Press the seams toward the B pieces.

When the ring is complete, it should lie flat. If it doesn't, you'll need to adjust a few seams.

APPLIQUÉ

  • Center the pieced ring on the 13" white print square. Pin or baste it in place.
  • Appliqué the outside edge of the ring only, turning under 1/4" of the fabric as you stitch. HINT: It may help you to mark the edge to be appliquéd. If you used a B template without seam allowance, trace around it lightly with pencil. Otherwise, make another B template and trace around that.
  • With a needle and thread, run a basting stitch about 1/8" inside the edge of the C piece. Don't knot the thread or backstitch.
  • Place the basted circle right side down. Center the C template on it. Pull the ends of the basting thread to gather the turn-under allowance.
  • Using a dry iron, press the turn-under allowance over the template.
  • Loosen the basting thread and remove the template. Press the turn-under allowance again without the template. If needed, a shot of spray starch will help it hold its shape.
  • Turn the pressed circle over and press it lightly from the front to insure a sharp edge. It is now ready to appliqué.
  • Center the press circle on the appliquéd ring. Pin it in place, then appliqué.
  • Press the completed block lightly from the back.
