Previous Block of the Month:    Garden Medley Series      Bachelor's Button                        (Block #1 in a 6 part series)

by Sherry Bonnice

Stroll down a path filled with garden delights. Watch in the coming months for the other 5 blocks. After all 6 blocks have been revealed, instructions for assembling your quilted bouquet will be provided.

Plant: your color scheme on a light or dark background.

Pick: an appliqué style that you prefer, fusible or needleturn.

Arrange: your block designs in a straight or on-point setting.

BLOCK SIZE: 5" square

FUSIBLE METHOD:

MATERIALS

  • Assorted scraps of light, medium and dark print solids
  • Fusible web
  • Embroidery floss in assorted colors to match or contrast with the fabrics

CUTTING                                                                                                         Pattern pieces for fusible appliqué are full size and do not need a turn-under allowance. Trace the desired pieces on the paper side of the fusible web. Rough cut around the shapes. Following the manufacturer's directions, fuse the web to the wrong side of the fabric scraps. Cut the fused pieces out on the drawn lines.

  • Cut 1: 6" square, light or dark print background fabric

DIRECTIONS

  • Referring to the block photos, lay the pieces, fusible side down, on the right side of the 6" background square. Alter the placement of the pieces as desired. Keep the upper and two side edges of the pieces at least 3/4" from the raw edges of the square. NOTE: The bottom edge of the stems and leaves in the straight-set block will be caught in the seam allowance when blocks are stitched together, so they do not need to be stitches down as you appliqué.
  • Following the manufacturer's directions, fuse the fabric pieces to the square in the following order: leaves, stems, calyxes, flowers.
  • With 2 strands of matching or contrasting embroidery floss, embroider around each piece with a buttonhole stitch. (See the preceding NOTE.)
  • Trim the block to 5 1/2" square, keeping the design centered.

NEEDLETURN METHOD:

MATERIALS

  • Assorted scraps of light, medium and dark prints or solids.
  • Fine cotton machine embroidery thread in assorted colors to match the fabrics
  • Freezer paper
  • 1/2" appliqué pins or basting glue (optional)

CUTTING                                                                                                         Trace the desired full-size pattern pieces on the dull side of the freezer paper. Cut on the drawn lines. Iron the freezer paper templates to the right side of the selected fabrics. Use pencil to lightly trace along the edge of the templates. This is your stitching line. Cut out the shapes adding a 1/8" to 3/16" turn-under allowance around each piece. Remove the freezer paper.

  • Cut 1: 6" square, light or dark print background fabric

DIRECTIONS

  • Referring to the block photos, arrange the leaves on the background square altering placement as desired. Keep the pieces at least 3/4" away from upper and side edges of the square. Pin or glue them in place. Stitch the pieces to the background square, turning under the seam allowance as you sew. It is not necessary to turn under the allowance where pieces overlap. NOTE: The bottom edge of the stems and leaves in the straight set block will be caught in the seam allowance when blocks are stitched together so it is not necessary to turn under the allowance there.
  • In the same manner, arrange stems on the background square and appliqué them in place.
  • Arrange the calyxes and stitch, as before, followed by the flowers.
  • Trim the block to 5 1/2" square, keeping the design centered.
