Previous Block of the Month:  Garden Medley Series   Daisy Block                          (Block #2 in a 6 part series)

by Sherry Bonnice

Daisy, Daisy give me your answer true... Sing a favorite summer song as you stitch a daisy pretty enough to add to your quilted bouquet. Watch in the coming months for the other 4 blocks. After all 6 blocks have been revealed, instructions for assembling your quilted bouquet will be provided.

BLOCK SIZE: 5" square

FUSIBLE METHOD:

MATERIALS

  • Piece of fabric at least 6" square for the background
  • Assorted scraps of light, medium and dark prints or solids
  • Fusible web
  • Embroidery floss in assorted colors to match or contrast with the fabrics

CUTTING

The appliqué patterns are full size and do not need a seam allowance. Trace the appropriate pieces on the paper side of the fusible web. Rough cut around the shapes. Following the manufacturer's directions, fuse the web to the wrong side of the fabric scraps. Cut the fused pieces out on the drawn lines.

  • Cut 1: 6" square, light or dark print background fabric

DIRECTIONS

  • Lay the appliqué pieces, fusible side down, on the right side of the 6" background square. Arrange them, using the Placement Diagram (link below) as a guide but altering placement as desired. Keep the upper pieces and side pieces at least 3/4" from the raw edges of the square.
  • Following the manufacturer's directions, fuse the fabric pieces to the square in the following order: stem, leaves, petals, center.
  • With 2 strands of matching or contrasting embroidery floss, embroider around each piece with a buttonhole stitch.
  • Trim the block to 5 1/2" square, keeping the design centered.

NEEDLETURN METHOD:

MATERIALS

  • Piece of fabric at least 6" square for the background
  • Assorted scraps of light, medium and dark prints or solids
  • Fine cotton machine embroidery thread in assorted colors to match the fabrics
  • Freezer paper
  • 1/2" appliqué pins or basting glue (optional)

CUTTING                                                                                                         Trace the appropriate full-size patterns on the dull side of the freezer paper. Note that you have the option of tracing 2 alternative needleturn flower petals instead of 10 individual petals. Cut on the drawn lines. Iron the freezer paper templates to the right side of the selected fabrics. Use pencil to lightly trace along the edge of the templates. This is your stitching line. Cut out the shapes adding a 1/8" to 3/16" turn-under allowance.

  • Cut 1: 6" square, light or dark print background fabric

DIRECTIONS

  • Arrange the stem and leaves on the background square, using the Placement Diagram (link below) as a guide but altering placement as desired. Keep all pieces at least 3/4" away from the upper and side edges. Pin or glue them in place. Stitch the pieces to the background square, turning under the seam allowance as you sew. It is not necessary to turn under the allowance where pieces overlap. The bottom edges of pieces at the bottom of the straight-set block can be left unstitches as they will be caught in the seam allowance.
  • Place a needleturn petal piece on the background square, turning it until you feel it fits with the stem and leaves. Appliqué it in place.
  • In the same manner, arrange the remaining needleturn petal piece and appliqué it in place.
  • Appliqué the flower center in place.
  • Trim the block to 5 1/2" square, keeping the design centered.
