Get Ready to Appliqué

Using heat-resistant template plastic can ease appliqué anxiety in your next project. By pressing the turn-under allowance, you can eliminate the need for needleturning. Follow    the steps below for perfect appliqué the easy way.

1. Trace the appliqué pattern on the heat-resistant plastic and cut out the pieces.
2. Trace the plastic template on the wrong side of the fabric.
3. Cut out the appliqué pieces, adding a 1/4" seam allowance.
4. Place a small amount of liquid starch into a bowl. Using a cotton swab, apply starch to the seam allowance.
5. Place the heat-resistant plastic template on the appliqué piece of fabric. Using the point of the iron, press the 1/4" seam allowance over the edge of the plastic.
6. Pin the appliqué pieces in place on the background fabric. The pressed seam allowance makes it easier to have rounded curves and perfect points.

7. Appliqué the pieces in place using your favorite method of hand or machine appliqué.
