Previous Block of the Month: Guiding Star

Try this timeless design for a season rich in tradition!

A pattern first published by Aunt Martha Studios in 1941, Guiding Star aptly symbolizes the spirit of Christmas. Experienced quiltmakers will enjoy piecing this block.

BLOCK SIZE: 8" square

MATERIALS                                                                                         Yardage is estimated for 44" fabric.                                                

• 5 1/2" x 15" piece of dark gold print
• 5" x 9" piece of light gold print
• 7" x 11" piece of red print

CUTTING                                                                                                    Pattern pieces are full size and include a 1/4" seam allowance, as do all dimensions given.                                          

• Cut 4: A, dark gold print
• Cut 4: B, light gold print
• Cut 4: C, red print
• Cut 4: CR, red print

PIECING

	Join a dark gold print A and a light gold print B. Start and stop stitching 1/4" from the edges and backstitch. Make 4.
	Join the units in pairs, then join the pairs to make a star. Start and stop stitching 1/4" from the edges and backstitch.
	Set in the red print C's and CR's. Fold the block in half, right sides together, and sew the seams joining the C's and CR's. Start stitching at the outer edge and stop at the point of the light gold B and backstitch. Unfold the block, refold it in the opposite direction and stitch the remaining 2 seams in the same way.
