Previous Block of the Month: Harvest Basket

by Nancy Roberts

Fall flowers and colorful leaves spill from a plaid basket in Nancy Roberts' traditional Harvest Basket block (12" x 12"). Use your favorite autumn print, or make a set of four baskets, one for each season.

BLOCK SIZE: 12" square

MATERIALS                                                                                           Yardage is estimated for 44" fabric.

  • 1/8 yard autumn print, or a scrap at least 6" x 8" or 4" x 12"
  • 1/4 yard white or other neutral background fabric; a "fat" eighth (11" x 18") will also be adequate
  • 1/4 yard dark plaid - or a "fat" eighth

CUTTING

  • Cut 6: A, print; or cut three 3 7/8" squares in half diagonally
  • Cut 8: A, white; or cut four 3 7/8" squares in half diagonally
  • Cut 2: A, dark plaid; or cut a 3 7/8" square in half diagonally
  • Cut 2: B, white; or cut 3 1/2" x 6 1/2" rectangles
  • Cut 1: C, dark plaid; or cut a 6 7/8" square in half diagonally to make 2 triangles - you'll use just one
  • Cut 1: C, white; or cut a 6 7/8" square in half diagonally to make 2 triangles - you'll use just one

PIECING

Basket, pattern 1

  • Join a print A and a white A to make a pieced square. Make 6.

Basket, pattern 2

  • Take one of the pieced squares and sew white A's to adjacent sides. Then sew a dark plaid C to it, to make the block center.

Basket, pattern 3

  • Sew a vertical row of 2 pieced squares and join it to the left side of the block center.
  • Make a horizontal row of 3 pieced squares and join it to the top of the block center.

Basket, pattern 4

  • Stitch dark plaid A's to the ends of the B pieces, positioning them as shown. Join the pieced units accordingly to the diagram. Then finish the Harvest Basket block by stitching a white C in the corner.
