Previous Block of the Month:  Jack's Delight

This easy block highlights a special floral or print fabric.

According to Barbara Brackman's Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns, Jack's Delight was first published in Practical Needlework: Quilt Patterns. The designer was Clara Stone. This block, with its large center square, gives the quiltmaker a chance to show off a favorite fabric.

BLOCK SIZE: 10 1/2" square

MATERIALS                                                                                                  This block was pieced with 3 fabrics. The number of fabrics needed depends on the way you decide to arrange them. Refer to the block diagram to plan your fabric arrangement.

CUTTING                                                                                                         Dimensions include a 1/4" seam allowance.

  • Cut 1: 5 1/2" square, focus fabric, for the center square
  • Cut 4: 3 3/8" squares, light print, for the pieced squares
  • Cut 4: 3 3/8" squares, contrasting print, for the pieced squares
  • Cut 2: 3 3/8" squares, one or 2 print(s), then cut them in half diagonally to yield 4 small triangles, for the side triangles
  • Cut 2: 4 1/2" squares, print, then cut them in half diagonally to yield 4 large triangles, for the corner triangles

DIRECTIONS

  • Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of each 3 3/8" light print square.
  • Place a marked square on a 3 3/8" contrasting print square, right sides together. Sew 1/4" away from the drawn line on both sides. Make 4.

  • Cut the squares on the drawn lines to yield 8 pieced squares. Press the seam allowances toward the darker print.
  • Sew 2 pieced squares into a pair, as shown. Make 2.

  • Sew 2 pieced squares together to make a reverse pair, as shown. Make 2.

  • Lay out the 5 1/2" center square, the pairs of pieced squares and the small triangles, as shown.

  • Sew 2 pairs of pieced squares to opposite sides of the 5 1/2" center square.
  • Sew small side triangles to the ends of the remaining pairs of pieced squares.
  • Sew the three sections together.
  • Sew a large corner triangle to each side of the unit to complete the block.

There are no full-size pattern pieces for Jack's Delight.
