Previous Block of the Month:
Lantern
Celebrate with a festive
block.
According to Barbara Brackman's Encyclopedia of
Pieced Quilt Patterns, the "Lantern" block was originally
published by the Old Chelsea Station Needlecraft Service. OCS was a
mail-order company which began in 1993 and sold patterns under the names of
Alice Brooks, Laura Wheeler, and Carol Curtis.

- Green print at least 2" x 8"
- Pink print at least 2" x 8"
- Dark pink print at least 4" square
- 1/6 yard light print for the background
CUTTING
Dimensions include a 1/4" seam allowance.
- Cut 2: 2" x 7 3/4"
strips, blue print
- Cut 1: 2" x 7 3/4"
strip, green print
- Cut 1: 2" x 7 3/4"
strip, pink print
- Cut 2: 2" x 4"
strips, dark pink print
- Cut 8: 2" x 6 1/2"
strips, background print
- Cut 4: 2" x 4 1/2"
strips, background print
- Cut 1: 4 1/2"
square, background print, then cut it in half diagonally to yield 2
triangles
- Spray starch
(optional, but recommended)
DIRECTIONS
- Place a 2" x 6 1/2" background print strip on
each end of the 2" x 7 3/4" green print strip, right sides together
and aligning the corners. Draw diagonally lines, as shown, on each
background strip. Pin the background strips to the green print strip.
|
 |
- Sew on the drawn lines. Fold the background
strips up, press the seams open, then trim the seam allowances to 1/4"
to complete a long pieced strip.
- In the same manner, make 3 long pieced strips
using the 2" x 7 3/4" pink print strip, the 2" x 7 3/4" blue print
strips, and the remaining 2" x 7 3/4" background strips.
- Sew the green pieced to one of the blue pieced
strips, as shown. Press the seam allowance open.
|
 |
- Sew the pink pieced strip to the remaining blue
pieced strip in the same manner. Sew the 2 units together to make the
center unit, as shown. Press the seam allowance open.
|
 |
- Sew two 2" x 4 1/2" background strips to a 2" x
4" dark pink print strip to make a short pieced strip. Press the seam
allowances open. Make 2.
|
 |
- Fold each short pieced strip in half and crease
the fold to mark the center. Fold each background print triangle in
half and crease the fold to mark the center.
- Sew a background triangle to a short pieced
strip, matching the creases. Make 2. Press the seam allowances toward
the triangles.
|
 |
- Center and sew the dark pink units to the
center unit. Press the seam allowances open. NOTE: Because the
finished block will have bias edges, we recommend starching the pieced
unit in the following manner to avoid stretching.
- Turn the pieced unit wrong side up, and spray
it liberally with spray starch. Press until dry. The fabric should be
quite stiff. If necessary, spray and press again.
- Trim the edges of the unit even with the
triangles, as shown, to square the block.

There are no full-size pattern pieces for the
Lantern block.
