Lily of the Field    

Previous Block of the Month:      Lily of the Field

Lily of the Field (12" x 12"). First published in 1927, this distinctive block features a large, showy blossom and clearly defined leaves. Pieced in traditional prints, it assumes the character of a 19th century quilt. Joanne Nolt stitched our sample.

BLOCK SIZE: 12" square

MATERIALS

  • 9" square, flower print
  • 10 1/2" square, green
  • 18" square, white

CUTTING                                                                                                   Pattern pieces are full size and include a 1/4" seam allowance, as do all dimensions given.

  • Cut 1: 6 1/2" square, flower print
  • Cut 8: A, flower print; or cut four 2 3/8" squares in half diagonally
  • Cut 6: A, green; or cut three 2 3/8" squares in half diagonally
  • Cut 1: B, green
  • Cut 1: BR, green
  • Cut 1: D, green
  • Cut 14: A, white; or cut seven 2 3/8" squares in half diagonally
  • Cut 1: B, white
  • Cut 1: BR, white
  • Cut 2: 3 1/2" x 5" rectangle, white
  • Cut 1: 2" square, white
  • Cut 2: C, white, or cut one 5" square in half diagonally

DIRECTIONS

Lily, pattern 1 Stitch a flower print A to a white A forming a pieced square. Make 8.
Lily, pattern 2 Stitch a row of 4 pieced squares exactly as shown. Join it to the 6 1/2 flower print square.
Lily, pattern 3 Make a second row of 4 pieced squares, as shown, adding a 2" white square to one end. Join this unit to the 6 1/2" flower print square to form the flower.

Lily, pattern 4

Stitch a green B to a white B. Stitch a green BR to a white BR.
Lily, pattern 5 Stitch a green A to a white A forming a pieced square. Make 2 rows of 3 pieced squares, as shown.
Lily, pattern 6 Stitch a green pieced square row to the green B & BR rectangles, forming the leaves.
Lily, pattern 7 Stitch the green D piece between the C triangles. Press the white toward the green, forming the stem.
Lily, pattern 8 Lay out the block as shown. Stitch the leaf and stem pieces to the flower.
