Maple Leaf

Previous Block of the Month:   Maple Leaf

Try this variation of a familiar autumnal block.

"Maple Leaf" (10 1/2" square), pieced by co-editor Debra Feece, is an Aunt Martha design from the 1930s. This block pattern seems to be the most unusual of all the Maple Leaf variations and rotary cutting makes it quick to make.

BLOCK SIZE: 10 1/2"

MATERIALS

  • Rust print at least 9" x 11"
  • Green print at least 4" x 9"
  • Tea-dyed muslin at least 9" x 11"

CUTTING                                                                                                              All dimensions include a 1/4" seam allowance.

  • Cut 1: 7/8" x 6 1/2" bias strip, rust print
  • Cut 1: 4" square, rust print
  • Cut 11: 2 1/4" squares, rust print
  • Cut 4: 2 1/4" x 4" rectangles, green print
  • Cut 1: 4" square, tea-dyed muslin
  • Cut 7: 2 1/4" x 4" rectangles, tea-dyed muslin
  • Cut 3: 2 1/4" squares, tea-dyed muslin

DIRECTIONS

Maple Leaf, pattern 1

  • Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of eight 2 1/4" rust print squares.
  • Place a marked rust print square on one end of a 2 1/4" x 4" tea-dyed muslin rectangle, right sides together. Sew on the drawn line, as shown.
  • Press the square toward the corner, aligning the raw edges. Trim the seam allowance to 1/4".

Maple Leaf, pattern 2

  • Place a marked rust print square on the opposite end of the rectangle, right sides together. Sew on the drawn line. Press and trim as before to complete a Flying Geese unit. Make 4.

Maple Leaf, pattern 3

  • Sew a 2 1/4" x 4" green print rectangle to a Flying Geese unit to make a pieced square, as shown. Make 4. Set them aside.

Maple Leaf, pattern 4

  • Sew a 2 1/4" rust print square to a 2 1/4" tea-dyed muslin square. Make 3.
  • Sew a 2 1/4" x 4" tea-dyed muslin rectangle to one unit, as shown.

Maple Leaf, pattern 5

  • Sew a 2 1/4" x 4" tea-dyed muslin rectangle to each of the remaining units, as shown. Set them aside.

Maple Leaf, pattern 6

  • To prepare the stem, press both long edges of the 7/8" 6 1/2" rust print strip 3/16" toward the wrong side.
  • Appliqué the prepared stem to the 4" tea-dyed muslin square, curving it from corner to corner, as shown. Trim the ends of the strip to square the corners.

Maple Leaf, pattern 7

  • Lay out all the units and the 4" rust print square. Sew them into rows, as shown. Join the rows to complete the block.

There are no full-size patterns available for the Maple Leaf block.
