Mom's Unwanted Block

Mom's Unwanted Block, by Debra Feece

Previous Block of the Month:      Mom's Unwanted Block

An uncommon block with graphic appeal.

Mary Fetter of Montrose, Pennsylvania, calls her antique block "Mom's Unwanted Block" (9 1/2" square). Mary's mother received it along with various other blocks and some vintage fabric scraps. She didn't want it and gave it away! Co-editor, Debra Feece, stitched her own version (shown below) but we can't seem to identify this block, perhaps it is one of a kind. If you know the name of the design or its origin, please send us a note. We'll print it in a future issue.

BLOCK SIZE: 9 1/2" square

Mom, pattern 3
  • Sew the 1 1/4" x 5 3/4" dark print strips to opposite sides of the unit. Sew the 1 1/4" x 7 1/4" dark print strips to the remaining sides to make the center unit. Set it aside.
Mom, pattern 4
  • Sew a 1 1/4" x 4 1/4" dark print strip between 2 large light print triangles to make a corner unit. Be sure to align the edges, as shown. Make 4.
Mom, pattern 5
  • Trim to square the corner of each corner unit.
Mom, pattern 6
  • Center a corner unit on one side of the center unit, right sides together. Carefully flip them over and sew them together with the center unit on top.
  • In the same manner, sew a corner unit to the opposite side of the center unit.
