Mom's
Unwanted Block
An uncommon block with graphic appeal.
Mary Fetter of Montrose, Pennsylvania, calls her antique block "Mom's
Unwanted Block" (9 1/2" square). Mary's mother received it along with
various other blocks and some vintage fabric scraps. She didn't want it and gave it away!
Co-editor, Debra Feece, stitched her own version (shown below) but we can't seem to
identify this block, perhaps it is one of a kind. If you know the name of the design or
its origin, please send us a note. We'll print it in a future issue.
BLOCK SIZE: 9 1/2" square
MATERIALS
- Light print at least 9" x 11"
- 1/8 yard dark print
CUTTING
Dimensions include a 1/4" seam allowance.
- Cut 1: 2 3/4" square, light print
- Cut 2: 3 1/2" squares, light print; then cut them in half diagonally to yield 4
small triangles
- Cut 2: 5 1/2" squares, light print; then cut them in quarters diagonally to yield 8
large triangles
- Cut 2: 1 1/4" x 2 3/4" strips, dark print
- Cut 2: 1 1/4" x 4 1/4" strips, dark print
- Cut 2: 1 1/4" x 5 3/4" strips, dark print
- Cut 2: 1 1/4" x 7 1/4" strips, dark print
- Cut 4: 1 1/4" x 4 1/4" strips, dark print
PIECING
 |
- Sew the 1 1/4" x 2 3/4" dark prints to opposite sides of the 2 3/4" light
print square. Sew the 1 1/4" x 4 1/4" dark print strips to the remaining
sides.

- Sew small light print triangles to opposite sides of the unit. Sew the remaining small
light print triangles to the remaining sides.

- Sew the 1 1/4" x 5 3/4" dark print strips to opposite sides of the unit. Sew
the 1 1/4" x 7 1/4" dark print strips to the remaining sides to make the center
unit. Set it aside.

- Sew a 1 1/4" x 4 1/4" dark print strip between 2 large light print triangles
to make a corner unit. Be sure to align the edges, as shown. Make 4.

- Trim to square the corner of each corner unit.
|
 |
- Center a corner unit on one side of the center unit, right sides together. Carefully
flip them over and sew them together with the center unit on top.
- In the same manner, sew a corner unit to the opposite side of the center unit.
- Sew the remaining corner units to the remaining sides to complete the block.
