Mini Quilt Blocks - Garden Medley #5

Pansy by Sherry Bonnice

Paint this pretty pansy with your favorite fabrics to complete the fifth block in the Garden Medley series.

 Block Size: 5" square

Fusible Method

 Materials

  • Piece of fabric at least 6” square for the background
  • Assorted scraps of light, medium and dark prints or solids.
  • Fusible web
  • Embroidery floss in assorted colors to match or contrast with the fabrics

Cutting

Pattern pieces are full size and do not need a seam allowance. Trace the pieces on the paper side of the fusible web. Rough cut around the shapes. Following the manufacturer’s directions, fuse the web to the wrong side of selected fabric scraps. Cut the fused pieces out on the drawn lines.

  • Cut 1: 6” square. Light or dark print background fabric

 Directions

  • Lay the appliqué pieces, fusible side down, on the right side of the 6” background square. Arrange them using the Placement Diagram as a guide but altering the placement as desired. Keep the pieces at least ¾” from the raw edges of the square. NOTE: The left edge of Piece A on the straight-set block should extend into the seam allowance and cam be left unstitched.
  • Following the manufacturer’s directions, fuse the fabric pieces to the square.
  • With 2 strands of embroidery floss, embroider around each piece with a buttonhole stitch.
  • Trim the block to 5 ½” square, keeping the design centered.

Needleturn Method

 Materials

  • Piece of fabric at least 6” square for the background.
  • Assorted scraps of light, medium, and dark prints or solids.
  • Fine cotton machine embroidery thread in assorted colors to match the fabrics.
  • Freezer paper
  • ½” appliqué pins or basting glue (optional)

 Cutting

Pattern pieces are full size and do not include a seam allowance. Trace the patterns on the dull side of the freezer paper. Cut them out on the drawn lines. Iron the freezer paper templates to the right side of selected fabrics. Use a pencil to lightly trace along the edge of the templates. This line is your stitching line. Cut out the shapes adding a 1/8” to 3/16” turn-under allowance.

  • Cut 1: 6” square light or dark print background fabric.

Directions

  • Arrange A, B, and C on the background square, using the Placement Diagram as a guide but altering the placement as desired. Keep the pieces at least ¾” from the raw edges of the square. NOTE: The left edge of Piece A on the straight set block should extend into the seam allowance and can be left unstitched. Pin or glue them in place. Use the tip of your needle to turn under the allowance as you appliqué each piece in place. It is not necessary to turn under the allowance or stitch where pieced will be overlapped.
  • Arrange D and E along the lower edge of B and C, adjusting placement as desired. Appliqué them in place.
  • Arrange piece F, making sure that pieces G and H will cover the top edge when sewn in place. Appliqué it in place.
  • In the same manner, arrange I and stitch as before.
  • Arrange pieces G and H and appliqué them in place.
  • Center J where G, H, and I meet and Stitch as before.
  • Trim the block to 5 ½” square, keeping the design centered.
