| 1. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of each 2 1/2" shirting print square. | |
| 2. Place a marked square on one end of a 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" print or plaid rectangle. Stitch on the marked line. |
| 3. Press the square toward the corner, aligning the corners. Trim the seam allowance to 1/4". | |
| 4. Place a marked square on the opposite end of the rectangle. Stitch, press, and trim, as before, to complete a Flying Geese unit. Make 6. |
| 5. Stitch the Flying Geese units into a row. Stitch the 2" x 12 1/2" muslin strips to the sides of the row. Press the seam allowances as indicated by the arrows. |
| 6. Stitch the 1 3/4" x 7 1/2" muslin strip to the top of the Flying Geese section and the 5" x 7 1/2" muslin strip to the bottom. Stitch the 3 1/2" x 7" muslin rectangle to the lower left corner, as shown. |
| 7. Place the stocking pattern on the pieced unit, centering the Flying Geese and making sure they're straight. Pin the pattern to the unit. | |
| 8. Trace around the pattern. | |
| 9. Layer the 11" x 19" muslin rectangle, batting, and stocking unit and baste the layers together. Quilt as desired inside the drawn line. | |
| 10. Cut the stocking out on the line. | |
| 11. Place a 2 1/2" x 5" plaid or print rectangle right side down on the stocking with one edge of the rectangle on the heel placement line. Stitch 1/4" from the edge of the rectangle. |
| 12. Fold the rectangle back and make sure it covers the stocking. Baste close to the edge of the stocking and trim the excess fabric from the rectangle. |
| 13. Repeat for the toe. | |
| 14. Place the stocking on the 11" x 19" backing fabric, right sides together. Stitch around the stocking, leaving the top edge open and backstitching at the beginning and end of the seam. Trim the backing fabric and batting even with the edges of the stocking. | |
| 15. Cut a 1" x 6" strip from the leftover backing fabric. Fold the long edges of the strip 1/4" toward the wrong side. Fold the strip in half. Stitch the folded edges together. |
| 16. Fold the strip in half, placing the ends together. Aligning the raw edges of the strip with the top edge of the stocking, baste the ends of the strip to the stocking just beyond the seamline on the right side of the backing. | |
| 17. Stitch the stocking linings right sides together, leaving a 4" opening in one long side and leaving the top open as before. Backstitch at the beginning and end of each seam. Turn the lining right side out. |
| 18. Tuck the lining inside the stocking so right sides are facing. Pin the lining to the stocking around the top edge. Stitch them together around the entire top. |
| 19. Turn the stocking right side out through the lining opening. Stitch the opening closed and tuck the lining inside the stocking. | |
