Making Prairie Points

Follow these easy steps for making Prairie Points to give your quilts a different finish. This method was used with the Flying Geese in the Log Cabin pattern on page 24 of the premier issue of QuiltWorks Today.

1. Cut the required-size square.
2. Fold the square in half diagonally to make a triangle and press the fold.
3. Fold the triangle in half and press the fold.
4. Keeping the backing free, pin the prairie points to the quilt top and batting, aligning the raw edges. Overlap the prairie points at the seamline.
5. Stitch the prairie points to the quilt top and batting with a 1/4" seam allowance, keeping the backing out of the way.
6. Trim the backing 1/4" beyond the edge of the quilt top.
7. Turn the points away from the quilt and lightly press the seam allowance to the back. Trim the batting in the seam allowance to reduce bulk, if desired.
8. Fold the edge of the backing under and slipstitch the folded edge to the back side of the prairie points along the stitching line.

9. Finish the quilting as desired.
