Previous Block of the Month: Strippy Heart

A Fabric Valentine!

Karen Rogowski of Meshoppen, Pennsylvania, found a Strippy Heart block (12" x 12") among her grandmother's quilting projects. After measuring all the strips and drafting her own pattern, Karen used the block in a quilt for her daughter's waterbed. "This was my first real quilt," she explains proudly.

BLOCK SIZE: 12" square

MATERIALS                                                                                                Yardage is estimated for 44" fabric.

• 1/8 yard red
• 1 1/2" strip of lighter red, at least 34" long
• 1/8 to 1/4 yard white or other light background color

PREPARATION

• Cut 2: 1 1/2" x 44" strips, red
• Cut 1: 1 1/2" x 34" strip, lighter red
• Cut 2: 1 1/2" x 44" strips, white

NOTE: Depending on the width of your fabric and the amount of waste you incur while cutting strips, you may need to cut a third white strip.

CUTTING                                                                                                    Cut the following pieces from the 1 1/2" strips. All dimensions include 1/4" seam allowance and can be cut exactly as specified. After cutting, stack the pieces for each row separately.

Row 1:                                      

• Cut 1: 10 1/2" strip, white

Row 2:

• Cut 2: 2 1/2" strips, white
• Cut 2: 1 1/2" squares, red
• Cut 1: 4 1/2" strip, white

Row 3:

• Cut 2: 1 1/2" squares, white
• Cut 2: 3 1/2" strips, red
• Cut 1: 2 1/2" strip, white

Row 4:

• Cut 2: 2 1/2" strips, red
• Cut 2: 1 1/2" squares, lighter red
• Cut 1: 4 1/2" strip, red

Row 5:

• Cut 2: 1 1/2" squares, red
• Cut 2: 3 1/2" strips, lighter red
• Cut 1: 2 1/2" strip, red

Row 6:

• Cut 2: 1 1/2" squares, red
• Cut 1: 8 1/2" strip, lighter red

Row 7:

• Cut 2: 2 1/2" strips, red
• Cut 1: 6 1/2" strip, lighter red

Row 8:

• Cut 2: 1 1/2" squares, white
• Cut 2: 2 1/2" strips, red
• Cut 1: 4 1/2" strip, lighter red

Row 9:

• Cut 2: 2 1/2" strips, white
• Cut 2: 2 1/2" strips, red
• Cut 1: 2 1/2" strip, lighter red

Row 10:

• Cut 2: 3 1/2" strips, white
• Cut 1: 4 1/2" strip, red

Row 11:

• Cut 2: 4 1/2" strips, white
• Cut 1: 2 1/2" strip, red

Row 12:

• Cut 1: 10 1/2" strip, white

Side Strips:

• Cut 2: 12 1/2" strips, white

PIECING

	Lay out each row according to the diagram. Join the pieces in each row. Stitch the rows together.
	Sew the 12 1/2" white strips to the left and right sides of the heart, completing the block.
