Spring Has Come

Previous Block of the Month:       Spring Has Come

A simple Nine-Patch gets dressed up with triangles.

"Spring Has Come" (10" square) would make a lovely addition to a Sampler quilt. The block is a design featured in a 1920s to 1940s syndicated quilt column published under the name of Nancy Page. Piece it in as few as two fabrics or as many as five. Chain sewing makes quick work of the small pieced squares that frame the block.

BLOCK SIZE: 10" square

MATERIALS                                                                                                Scraps of five different pink and green prints in light, medium and dark values, each at least 10" square. NOTE: The block shown includes light pink, light pink floral, pink tone-on-tone, medium green and dark green prints.

CUTTING                                                                                                            Pattern pieces include a 1/4" seam allowance as do all dimensions given.

  • Cut 5: A, light pink floral print, or cut 2 1/4" squares
  • Cut 4: A, medium green print, or cut 2 1/4" squares
  • Cut 4: B, pink tone-on-tone print; or cut two 4 5/8" squares, then cut them in half diagonally
  • Cut 4: 1 3/4" squares, light pink print
  • Cut 12: 2 1/8" squares, light pink print
  • Cut 12: 2 1/8" squares, dark green print

PIECING

Spring, pattern 1
  • Lay out the light pink floral A's and the medium green print A's in a Nine Patch, as shown. Sew the A's in rows and join the rows.
Spring, pattern 2
  • Sew B's to opposite sides of the Nine Patch. Sew the remaining B's to the remaining sides to complete the block.
Spring, pattern 3
  • Use a pencil to mark a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of each 2 1/8" light pink print square.
  • Place a marked light pink print square on a 2 1/8" dark green print square, right sides together. Repeat with the remaining squares. Sew one pair of squares 1/4" away from the marked line, stopping near the edges with the needle down. Leave this pair in the machine and feed another pair under the presser foot, sewing as before. Continue chain sewing the squares in this manner.
Spring, pattern 4
  • Remove the chain sewn squares from the machine and clip them apart. Turn them so that the stitched line is at the right. Sew one pair 1/4" from the marked line on the unstitched side. Leave this pair in the machine and chain sew the remaining pairs in the same manner. Clip them apart.
  • Press the squares to set the stitches and cut each apart on the marked line. Open and press them to yield 24 pieced squares. Trim off the dog ears.
Spring, pattern 5
  • Stitch 6 pieced squares to make a pieced row, as shown. Make 4.
Spring, pattern 6
  • Sew pieced rows to opposite sides of the block center, keeping the dark green triangles next to the block center.
Spring, pattern 7
  • Sew 1 3/4" light pink print squares to opposite ends of each of the remaining pieced rows.
Spring, pattern 8
  • Sew these to the remaining sides of the block center to complete a Spring Has Come block.
