Block of the Month

"Spider's Den" is an old Ladies Art Company pattern. Joanne Nolt has updated the look of this traditional block with today's fabrics. Strip piecing simplifies construction.

An easy block and the latest fabrics for hours of stitching pleasure!

BLOCK SIZE: 12" square

MATERIALS

Yardage is estimate for 44" fabric.

10" square of red
5" x 13" strip of black
13" square of tan
6" square of red print
8" square of black print
3 1/2" square of fabric for the center of the block

Note: Joanne centered a star from the Hoffman Celestial series in her block.

CUTTING

All dimensions include a 1/4" seam allowance.

Cut 4: A, tan
Cut 4: B, tan
Cut 4: BR, tan
Cut 2: strips 1 1/2" x 13", tan
Cut 1: strip 1 1/2" x 7", tan
Cut 4: B, red
Cut 4: BR, red
Cut 4: 2" x 3 1/2" rectangles, red
Cut 4: A, black
Cut 1: strip 1 1/2" x 13", black
Cut 2: strips 1 1/2" x 7", black
Cut 4: 1 1/2" x 3 1/2" rectangles, red print
Cut 8: 1 1/2" x 3 1/2" rectangles, black print

DIRECTIONS

	Stitch a black A to a tan A to form a pieced square. Make 4.
	Stitch a tan B to a red B to form a pieced rectangle. Make 4.
	Stitch a tan BR to a red BR. Make 4.
	Stitch a 1 1/2" x 3 1/2" red print rectangle between two 1 1/2" x 3 1/2" black print rectangles. Make 4.
	Stitch a 1 1/2" x 13" black strip between two 1 1/2" x 13" tan strips. Cut eight 1 1/2" slices from the strip. Stitch a 1 1/2" x 7" tan strip between two 1 1/2" x 7" black strips. Cut four 1 1/2" slices from the strip.
	Make 4 Nine Patches from the slices as shown. Stitch the slices together.

Lay out all the pieces referring to the photo and the block assembly diagram below. Stitch the pieces into rows. Join the rows to complete the block.
