Sassy Sunflower

Previous Block of the Month:            Sassy Sunflower

Sassy Sunflower (top right) was purchased in an antique shop in South Montrose, Pennsylvania. This 1930s block goes by many names, such as Rising Sun, Kansas Sunflower, Noonday, Sunburst and A Brave Sunflower. We've included a pattern piece for the background so you can make an 11" square block like the one pieced (below right) by co-editor Debra Feece.

BLOCK SIZE: 11" square

MATERIALS                                           Yardage is estimated for 44" fabric.

  • Gold print at least 12" square
  • 1/8 yard muslin

CUTTING                                                                                                  Pattern pieces are full size and include a 1/4" seam allowance, as do all dimensions given.

  • Cut 16: A, muslin
  • Cut 16: C, muslin
  • Cut 1: E, Muslin
  • Cut 16: B, gold print
  • Cut 1: D, gold print

PIECING

Sunflower, pattern 1

  • Sew 2 muslin A's to a print B, as shown. Make 8.

Sunflower, pattern 2

  • Sew print B's between the units to make a ring, as shown.

Sunflower, pattern 3

  • Sew muslin C's between the points of the B's, as shown.

Sunflower, pattern 4

  • Set the print D into the center of the ring or appliqué it to the ring to complete the circle, as shown.

Sunflower, pattern 5

  • Fold the muslin E in quarters and mark the folds on the wrong side of the fabric.
  • Fold the pieced circle in quarters and make a mark at each fold.
  • Place the muslin E on the pieced circle, right sides together and matching the marks. Pin the layers together at the marks.
  • Sew the muslin E to the pieced circle, aligning the raw edges as you sew.
  • Trim the block to 11 1/2" square.
