Star and Dot
According to The
Encyclopedia of Quilt Patterns by Barabra Brackman, "Star and Dot" was
published in Comfort in 1910. Comfort was a periodical
produced from 1888 until 1942, in Augusta, Maine, by Gannet and Morse. They
also published many patterns which they sold by mail-order and a booklet
entitled Comforts Appliqué and Patchwork: Revival of Old Time Patchwork
which was published in either 1921 or 1922.
Block Size: 5” square
Materials
- 3/4 yard white shirting
print NOTE: This is the amount necessary to use as the background for
the entire quilt.
- 4 each of assorted yellow and purple scraps, each at
least 1 ¾” x 4 ¼”
Cutting
All dimensions include a ¼” seam allowance
- Cut 4: A, purple prints
- Cut 4: AR, yellow prints
- Cut 4: B, white shirting print
- Cut 4: BR, white shirting print
Directions
- Stitch an A and AR, right sides together along their
longest side to make a star point, as shown. Make 4.

- Stitch a B to the left side and BR to the right side
of a star point to make a pieced triangle, as shown. Make 4.

- Stitch 2 pieced triangles, together to make a
half-block. Make 2.
- Stitch the half-blocks together to complete a Star
and Dot block.
