Turkey Giblets

Previous Block of the Month: Turkey Giblets
Here's a 60-year-old pattern you may not have tried yet!

Looking for an unusual Thanksgiving pattern? The Turkey Giblets block first appeared in Nancy Cabot's syndicated newspaper column in 1938. The design works well when stitched in two contrasting colors.

BLOCK SIZE: 12" square

MATERIALS                                                                                        Yardage is estimated for 44" fabric. The following materials will be enough to make 2 blocks.

  • 1/4 yard dark print
  • 1/4 yard light print

CUTTING                                                                                              Pattern pieces are full size and include a 1/4" seam allowance, as do all dimensions given.

  • Cut 4: A, dark print
  • Cut 4: A, light print
  • Cut 4: B, dark print
  • Cut 4: BR, dark print
  • Cut 4: B, light print
  • Cut 4: BR, light print

PIECING

Giblets, pattern 1
  • Join a dark B and BR to opposite ends of a light A, as indicated to make a pieced triangle, Make 4.
  • Join a light B and BR to opposite ends of a dark A. Make 4.
Giblets, pattern 2
  • Join the pieced triangles in pairs, making 4 pieced squares like the one shown.
Giblets, pattern 3
  • Arrange the pieced squares as shown. Stitch the squares together in pairs, then join the pairs to complete the block.
NOTE: If you make more than one block, be sure to lay out the pieced squares identically in each block. It's easy to make a block that "spins" in the opposite direction.
  • Notice the allover pattern that forms when 4 blocks are set together.

  • Turkey Giblets is a good block for an old-fashioned blue-and-white or red-and-white quilt. You can make a twin size quilt 60" x 84" with just 35 blocks. For a queen or double bed quilt 84" x 96", you'd need 56 blocks.
