Union Star

Previous Block of the Month:
Union Star

                                                             Create a real flag waver!

This eye-catching Union Star block
(9" x 9") was offered by the Ladies Art Company to mail order patrons nearly a hundred years ago. The pattern has also been called Moon and Star-presumably that's a full moon behind the star. Our block was stitched by Joanne Nolt, who comments, "This is a very rewarding block to piece, in any color."

BLOCK SIZE: 9" square

MATERIALS

15" square of white
15" square of blue
10" square of red
10" square of striped

CUTTING

Cut 5: A, white
Cut 5: B, blue
Cut 2: C, red
NOTE: Be sure to mark each of your C pieces with the notch at the center of the curved seam allowance.
Cut 2: C, striped

PIECING

Star, pattern 1 Hand piecing made this block very manageable. Stitch only on the seamlines, not to the edge of the fabric.

Stitch each white A to a blue B along the long straight side, as shown.

Stitch the short seams last
Star, pattern 2
Join the A-B units in pairs along the long straight sides, then join the short A seams.
Complete the inner circle. Press allowing the inner star to press out. Press the short A seams open.
Star, pattern 3 Stitch a red C to a striped C at the small straight seam. Clip the curved inner seam allowance up to, but not through the seamline.
Fold the completed inner circle into eighths marking each division with a straight pin.

Pin the double C piece to the circle, matching the pattern notches with circle pins.

Star, pattern 4 Stitch in place with the C piece facing you, removing pins as you stitch. Leave each end open 1/4".
Star, pattern 5 Stitch the remaining C pieces together at the small straight seam. Join them to the circle. Join the small straight seams to complete the block.
