Windflower

Previous Block of the Month: Windflower

Try curved piecing and make this bright and cheerful block.

When a Traditional Quiltworks reader asked for a pattern for Windflower, we were happy to fulfill her request. This is one version of this popular Laura Wheeler design. Pieced in bright colors by co-editor Debra Feece, it makes a cheery block with lots of energy.

BLOCK SIZE: 12"

MATERIALS

  • Dark pink print at least 7" x 13"
  • Green print at least 7" square
  • Blue print at least 4" x 8"
  • Muslin at least 9" x 13"

CUTTING                                                                                                  Pattern pieces A and B are full size and include a 1/4" seam allowance, as do all dimensions given.

  • Cut 4: A, dark pink print
  • Cut 4: 3 1/2" squares, green print
  • Cut 2: 3 7/8" squares, blue print
  • Cut 8: B, muslin
  • Cut 2: 3 7/8" squares, muslin

DIRECTIONS

Windflower, pattern 1

  • Pin a muslin B to a dark pink A, right sides together and aligning the dots. Sew them together, aligning the raw edges as you stitch.

Windflower, pattern 2

  • Sew a muslin B to the opposite side of the dark pink A in the same manner to make a Petal unit. Make 4. Press the seam allowances toward the dark pink.

Windflower, pattern 3

  • Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of each 3 7/8" muslin square.
  • Place a marked muslin square on a blue print square, right sides together. Sew 1/4" away from the diagonal line on both sides. Make 2.
  • Cut the squares on the drawn lines to yield 4 pieced squares. Press the seam allowances toward the blue print.

Windflower, pattern 4

  • Lay out a Petal unit, a 3 1/2" green print square and a pieced square. Sew them together to make a quarter-block. Make 4.

Windflower, pattern 5

  • Lay out the quarter-blocks, as shown. Sew the quarter-blocks into pairs and join the pairs to complete the block.
