Previous Block of the Month: Wheels

Wrap up your Christmas decorating with this special block.

It's understandable why this traditional block design was given the name "Wheels"  but in appropriate colors, we think it looks like a bow on a Christmas package. According to Barbara Brackman's Encyclopedia of Quilt Designs, Progressive Farmer, a periodical published in Birmingham, Alabama, first printed a pattern for this block.

BLOCK SIZE: 10" square

MATERIALS

  • Dark red print at least 6" x 12"
  • Medium red print at least 6 1/4" square
  • Piece of muslin at least 9 1/2" square

CUTTING                                                                                             Dimensions include a 1/4" seam allowance.

  • Cut 2: 5 7/8" squares, dark red print, then cut them in half diagonally to yield 4 triangles
  • Cut 1: 6 1/4" square, medium red print, then cut it in half diagonally to yield 4 triangles
  • Cut 1: 6 1/4" square, muslin, then cut it in quarters to yield 4 triangles
  • Cut 4: 3" squares, muslin

DIRECTIONS

  • Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of each 3" muslin square.
  • Place a marked square on the right-angle corner of a dark print triangle. Sew on the marked line. Make 4.
  • Turn one unit wrong side up and press the muslin square, as shown. Trim the seam allowance to 1/4". Repeat for each of the remaining units.
  • Sew a medium red triangle to a muslin triangle to make a pieced triangle, as shown. Make 4.
  • Sew a pieced triangle to a dark red unit to make a quarter-block. Make 4.
  • Sew the quarter blocks into pairs and join the pairs to complete the block.

There are no full-size pattern pieces for the Wheels block.
